For a while I was recruiting/canvassing schools with Table Tennis displays.
Simultaneously, we were taking school visits who were visiting the recycling plant.
One day...joking. Bizzarre.
It might...with me.
It's not a 'How to play table tennis guide*' its about the science of sport. Syed makes a compelling argument that hours of dedicated practise and environment are what make a champion, not talent.
*Got that.
In 8 years (8 frikkin years!!!) of coaching, I have only come across 1 protege. The Problem with the protege is that he is good at all sports and is particularly good at football and I will probably loose him to that.
Syed's angle is probably quite correct but it is not new. What you require from the individual is the determination, the motivation, the resolve and the adaptability. That is where the talent lies. The best environment and dedicated practise is only a part of the equation.
Given all of the above attributes, I would challenge Syed's theory with some basic requirements that will set a person on the right track. Success breeds success and if a child takes to something because certain basics are achievable, then they are more likely to keep trying. If they appear immediately too hard, they go away.
Personally, if a person has the determination in a ball sport, they need just one over-riding attribute: good balance.
You can work on balance but if someone has natural* balance, everything comes so much easier and that person will make big gains, whilst the one with poor balance will make incremental gains, regardless of the effort put in.
Personally, after hip replacement No3, I suddenly suffered vertigo. It was suggested that I work on my balance and found that it was very poor following convalescence. After just 6 weeks, twice a week at the gym, I could stand on a fit ball and do squats. By the end of the following year, I won the Wigtownshire Pool singles title and 1 year after that, the Wigtownshire TT Open and came runner up in the handicap competition. Improving my balance, better than it was ever previously tied everything together and the vertigo went completely.
At the TT sessions, we do balance exercises and the better players have better balance without exception. My protege is set exercises 2 or 3 times harder than anyone, he has exceptional balance. Before anyone picks up a TT bat as a newcomer, if I set them some balance exercises, I could almost guarantee that the one's who will take to it will be the one's with better balance.

Does intelligence serve you well in real life ?
I mean, there are different types of intelligence, some would say it is highly linked to self preservation or the "want" to do better, achieve more ?
I think the highest form of intelligence is the man/woman who is happy with what they have and enjoys the time they have with what they have.Living MY dream.0 -
That's you relegated to last place already Sean seeing as you can't even spell my name correctly ya idjit

In 8 years... itself.
Kids? They are 11+. Anything younger and they are usually too short. There are dedicated platforms for little one's but TT Scotland won't insure me/pay for them.
Take a beer mat and hold it with the thumb on top and 4 fingers together underneath, elbow bent and fore arm parallel to the body. Flick it using lots of wrist, extending the arm outwards fast. There you go: intro to backhand topspin. Get the mat travelling in a nice flat plain and then you can achieve consistency. Forehand is much more difficult. Arm out to the side, thumb underneath and fingers on top, bend the elbow: Forehand topsin. Combine elbow and wrist. Kids love fl i cking beer mats around.
Speed is about being loose and it's all in the elbow. The upper shoulder guides the rest of the arm. Moving the forearm quickly should make the wrist follow naturally. Kids are naturally loose and you have to exploit that.
TT England had a training video on youtube with a coach called John Stead and I had a long on-line argument with him because he was telling the kids to stop using their wrists because of the inconsistency. I asked him when he would 'switch' it back on and he told me "when they are ready" !! He's in the dinosaur era. I used my youtube ID and later had the 'privilege' of being a coaching assistant at one of his sessions. What a twunt.
John Stead was in the England team who beat Sweden in 1972 and has dined on it for years. TT in Britain is eons behind the Europeans who in turn are behind the Chinese - where does that put us?
The Europeans have a very different philosophy and I tend to use German and Swedish manuals.
Watch Timo Boll. You can see the wrist action - just like fl icking a beer mat! This guy should have been world No 1 but his whole career has been dogged by injury.

Too many people trying to raise the tone in here. Needs to be stopped now before we end up like one of those boring forums."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0
