So he could experience for himself what it feels like to take shoot, the effect on his body, any psychological effect. Understanding that side of the character.
Not quite buying that.
I can undestand someone playing a prisoner gets to know a prison environment by visiting and staying in a prison with inmates to some degree but I fail to see how injecting EPO into the blood vessel could make you anymore in character when you sit on a stationary bicycle in front of a green screen.
Not sure its for you to 'buy' anything, chap
I'm sure Ben Foster can buy his own gear0 -
The bit I'm not keen on is Foster saying that "Doping is not the reason why Lance Armstrong won". Oh really? I (and millions of others) beg to differ.
Shouldn't the argument be that the distinguishing feature in Lance's victories vs the opposition wasn't simply doping? (Logic being that the nearest opposition was doping too, so there must be a different distinguishing features e.g. more talent, harder training, better dope, better natural response to doping, better medical advice to make use of dope, more willingness to dope to extreme or more help from the UCI in suppressing positive tests etc.)
It's not particularly meaningful to observe that Lance wouldn't have won clean vs. doped up rivals as no-one would.0 -

He's said the psychological effect was the biggest surprise. I think it's a reasonable thing to do - It's low risk, he becomes more immersed in the world.
Anyone who's getting worked up about it really needs to get laid / out more.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -

Said by someone with 15.000 posts in a forum about other people's cycling. Yay! \o/
I'm kidding. I'm sure most aren't worked about that much in general regarding this film.0 -
there was no need to actually take EPO to get into the right mindset...he could just have pretended to be a Banker who "competes" in Sportives0

The world is changing, it used to be normal for successful young actors to dabble in drugs.0
-
I guess if you see doping as a public health issue (ultimately that's why it's banned, presumably) then an actor taking the stuff is another step to normalising it for the public.
It's also useful for her to remind everyone what her role was in all of this.0 -

Drugs are for mugs mmmkay.
Snorting boat loads of Charlie and being papped in the sun or Hello! used to be a sign you'd made it big.
Nowadays it's having your own chakra harmonising gluten free cookbook and your own fitness regime discussed in men's health, with a picture of your photo shopped Adonis.
Guess this plays to that.
You turn up on Graham Norton's sofa banging on about messy nights and soon your fellow A/B listers will shuffle away from you.0 -
Method acting and experiencing the character's life is essential to a modern film actor's performance. Take for example Anthony Hopkins's Oscar winning performance in The Silence of the Lambs. He never liked brag about it, but he killed and ate four or five Port Talbot residents in preparation.
Likewise Robert Downey Jr has in the past taken huge amounts of cocaine to prepare for roles, even if the character had no connection to cocaine.

During my "interesting summer" last year, one of the girls I worked in the bar with was a student at East (??) which is a method acting drama school. They did one play set in a 19th century brothel for which they prepared by being blindfolded, then having their face shoved in a bucket full of liquid...efluent...their nose covered by a rag of fresh...erm...gentlemens's relish and then they all went off and got down and dirty with one another*
My comment that it must of been one of the uglier kids that suggested the last bit did not go down that well...
Method acting can be rather strange...
(*I suspect that the option to act the sexy time was also available but apparently few took it)We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

He only won because he doped. I guess doping is not the "only" reason why he won.0 -
I nearly had a part in this movie as a racer but Frears said I was too old and unfit looking for a pro. I said "if I shave my hair I can play Bjarn Riis". Frears replied "you're hired". Unfortunately they cut my scenes.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

You should still insist on 60% of your fee...0 -

I've no problem with him doping for the role. Lets face it he'd have minimal preparation to play the worlds foremost cyclist. You'd need some milage in the legs to make it look even reasonably accurate.
I've been cycling for decades but I'm nowhere near Lances physique.
Presumably there would be umpteen takes of the action shots too - "just one more time up the Alpe please ?"
And I think they went to town on the accuracy - I know Condor provided a lot of old stock and painted up team bikes etc. Seemed to be pretty comprehensive - but I'm sure there will be a few modern things creeping in.
I'll go see it anyway. I like Chris O'Dowd - not heard of the LA actor before though ?0 -

I watched it today. Phil Liggett comes out of it badly as an a*** licking sycophant - and that's just from his archive commentaries!
Armstrong (Foster) comes across a bit more sympathetically than we've been used to from the books and press. I think it will rehabilitate him somewhat - people will say "everyone was doing EPO but Armstrong beat cancer and his charity was a force for good".
There is not a lot of cycling, much is a blend of archive footage and Foster and Chambery cyclists playing the pros, often filmed as TV coverage. It works pretty well on that level. The movie is quite short for such a long story and much is skipped over. Armstrong spends a lot of time alone lying on his sofa, brooding.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

Watched this at the cinema tonight.
For even the casual fan most of this will be common knowledge, and many details skipped over or left out for ease of telling the story.
It won't win any Oscars but is worth watching just out of curiosity, even if it is to see Joe Mangel from Neighbours on the big screen0 -

The pay was excellent (and unexpected) and I got extra for the bike
