Turbo Trainer and Virtual apps

Hi,

I'm thinking about the coming winter in the UK and how nasty the weather can be some times and it's lead me to consider buying a turbo trainer.

I'm looking at a Cycleops Fluid trainer as a guy I work with has one and it's quite, but I'd also like to use the virtual app they have produced, or if there is a better one ...

So my setup would be ...

Turbo trainer.
Bike.
ANT+ or Bluetooth speed and cadence monitor
Bluetooth heart rate monitor
iPad setup using Cycleops app

And what i expext to happen is that I'd start pedaling and join somebody in a virtual race.

Is that the case, sounds simple enough?

The more expensive, and not reachable models, offer resistance which is changed by the app. That's not within my budget.

  • I'm not familiar with the app your have mentioned. Have you checked out their web site to see what they say.

What is your goal? Do you want to ride around with other people or do you want to do serious interval training? If it is the former then I'd look into Zwift. It works how you have described and there are always lots of people on it (will be interesting to see how many pay when it moves out of beta). If you like interval training then Zwift is currently rubbish as it doesn't offer this feature. You need a PC or Mac to run Zwift.

I use a VirtualTrainer on the ipad this one lets me ride any route. They set up the ability to race people but there are never enough people to make "social". I imagine this would be the case with the one you mentioned.

In regards to equipment, what you've said somes good. Remember that unless you have an add-on ant device for your ipad it will not be able to read an ant+ heart rate monitor. The ipad does work well with bluetooth power meters, heart rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors.
