There's the piece. The heritage comment refers to the Record. Have a look. To be absolutely fair, nowhere on the Mitus pages do PX attempt to refer to heritage and, in relation to the Super Prestige, they go as far to say that Viner have little heritage in the CX arena. So, all this fuss is about the Record. Which looks rather nice. And quite heritagey (sic)
That's fair enough, isn't it? Being made in Italy, from steel, with lugs, by Viner. Bit heritage? My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

yes Viner had undisputed heritage, but your Viner frames don't.
Brilliant. So where do you stand on Jaguar or Aston Martin or Lamborghini and their heritage? Did it disappear with the change of ownership? Did it change with the different design teams or supply chains used to produce them? How about the various "re-badging" that goes on throughout other industries? Electronics has to be the best, would you pay twice as much for a Pioneer screen than one of the cheaper brands that use their products but rebadge them? And so on and so on.
Heritage is a load of old ****, either you like the stuff or you don't and you either perceive it as good value or you don't. Leave all the "yes but it's not a proper Viner" out of it, it's completely irrelevant.
I completely agree
It is very narrow minded to just go down the heritage path.
So why did Planet X buy the brand name then? If it wasn't to sell frames and bikes off the back of Viner's heritage?
I'm not saying that these new Viner's are bad bikes, just pointing out that PX are selling their version of a Viner off the back of the old Viner heritage.
"This is where Viner came from, they have undisputed heritage and real class in steel frames and that remains as true today as it every was during steel's heyday."
I think it is good that they have kept the Viner name alive, do you not? most people would never have heard of Viner anyway.0 -

I have no problem with badge engineering. Bike manufacturers have been at it for donkey's years.0 -
True that, and sometimes more than badge engineering. I've sometimes suspected lower-end frames and materials aren't worse by definition but purely by design. They could be better for the price, but that would eat into the sales of higher end stuff...0

The Selcof stuff (they bought a job lot) jars a little. But it's all easily remedied. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

It's a nice bike. But my opinion is a bit skewed, as I used to own a steel Viner years ago, that was built by the Viner family. For me, once that connection with the family is lost, then is it truly a Viner anymore?
What if Dario Pegoretti died and someone bought the rights to the brand name? Would subsequent 'Pegoretti's, no matter how well built and nice, be truly a Pegoretti?0 -

So you wouldn't have an Aston Martin now on the basis that it's no longer connected to Robert Bamford & Lionel Martin? And those idiots who are buying David Brown era cars for multi-millions are buying a name, not a true Aston Martin?

Thru axles. No idea if anyone thinks that's big.
But, mudguards as well. Which is a tidy addition. So, on those two bases we can assume the frame is a bit different. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Fair enough- didn't read the bit about guards.
Heritage argument aside, I think the Strada, Viner and this new Tomac look great.0 -

Are you sure? Spec says they both have mudguard mounts and thru axles. Geometry is the same, frame weights the same, the look the same to me...
Only difference I can see is the Tomac can take 38c tyres and the Viner 40c.0 -

On the main model there the mudguard mounts are hidden, closer look they are inside the frame. Looks like they've modified where they are now and on the frame only Strada and Tomac they are on the outside. So, yes, same frame.
There's also a slightly different other gravel bike on there as well. The bish bash bosh.
Your Viner is, as I recall, similar to the Pro Carbon. Orange one?My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

It is yellow and red (so i guess that makes orange!) it is the Gladium, a bit garish for some but I quite like the colour, was cheap too!www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -

I dunno about this heritage thing...if a dumbed down mass produced generic bike gets branded up it doesn't make it bad, but it grinds me if those products get passed on as being special and has heritage or similar.
The Viner may be a good bike, and the Tomac is the same. To ride on the heritage thing is BS though. Imo (and my humble opinion only) its marketing that misleads uninformed customers. Of course customers should inform themselves, but they don't.0 -

I think the mere fact that PX brands bikes as one of these old brands, is a bit of a ride on the "heritage thing"
Claims needn't be specific to models, thats what a brand is, is it not?0 -

Tomac, Viner. I'd heard of the latter. Had to look up the former. I guess they can trade on heritage for the % of people who had a clue that the brand existed. For the rest, it's irrelevant. I guess why that's why they make a big play of the race proven chassis claims on the Mitus instead.
The heritage thing was this board's reaction to the PX claim on the first page. But there is no heritage claim. Anyone well researched enough to know about Viner would google why it was showing up on PX before buying and would understand the truth. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Lots of people buy Planet X branded bikes - with all their heritage dating right back to the golden age of cycling when the likes of Merckx, Gimondi, Poulidor and others all rode Planet X frames. Oh, hang on, they didn't...
Personally, I think the Viner looks awesome - I know Viner has heritage, but I couldn't give a stuff whether any of that heritage has magically transferred itself to this frameset or not. I'll probably still buy one...0 -
...and they now have the BishBashBosh from On one that looks very similar...
Well, it's frame shaped yes. But it is different, clear differences in the shaping. And takes rack mounts. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I ve never noticed this before - why would they sell/stock the same frame with what is just 2 different colour schemes? I don't see the logic...We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
