Exposure Strada

There I was looking at the new Sirius Mk4 + TraceR bundle and thought, why not go big and saw the new Strada MK6 is coming.
Looking to upgrade from a Hope 2 + associated battery and cables + get something with a road specific beam.
The handlebar controller looks nifty too.
Any owners regret their choice?

the strada is by far the best light ive ever owned.
i originally bought it at cost price 7 years ago and its still going strong. if it died now i'd replace it straight away with the same again at full priceBMC TM01 - FCN 0
Look 695 (Geared) - FCN 1
Bowman Palace:R - FCN 1
Cannondale CAAD 9 - FCN 2
Premier (CX) - FCN 6
Premier (fixed/SS) - FCN30 -
Good stuff, will wait for a Spend X get X off deal + Quidco.0

I've got a mark V and it's excellent. Best light for road cycling out there. Lights up the road, doesn't blind other people and the batter life is fantastic.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX
Race - Fuji Norcom Straight
Sun - Cervelo R3
Winter / Commute - Dolan ADX0 -
I am on the market for lights too... but do I really need 1000 Lumen and the associated costs? I was hoping to get away with half of that amount
Battery life exceeding 2 hours would be goodleft the forum March 20230 -

I'm most interested in the control, beam pattern, battery life on low, not offending people in Richmond Park etc.
There are plenty of options at half the price. Is an internal battery or USB charging a must?0 -
I've got a Mk1 Strada which is still going... Battery life's a bit average now, but I replaced it without too much introspection with the latest Strada about a year ago. They're not cheap at all, but I wanted something I could always rely on.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0

Beam patten makes a differences, I have older Fenix torches which are around 200 lumens and spots vs the Knog blinder road 3 which is 300 lumens and has much more of a flood, plus a low beam/dip function.
And the wider beam allows you to track though bends etc much better and so on rather than just a small circle of light.
A lot depends on how dark and fast your going, the Fenix torches are fine for Bushy Park at low speeds but can't cope like the blinder with proper country riding, ie darker and faster.
If your after 2hrs run time with a decent amount of light unless you go eBay route that's going to get fairly pricey.0 -
Rutland do some great deals on previous versions of Exposure Lights - and the company themselves have a shop-soiled outlet on line which can also be good (although not so useful if you want the latest version)0
-
Thanks...
I need country road riding, internal battery would be nice to avoid cluttering the bike when I am not using the lights... USB not important, I assume I will have sockets at work and can carry around a charger if needed. Basically happy with pannier clutter, not happy with a million appliances stuck to my bars and frame tubesleft the forum March 20230 -
The Lezyne Mega Drive Y8 offers 1200 lumens (not that you'll use it), USB charging, should be good on 300/600 mode. Half the price of the Strada.

I was hoping to spend a bit less, to be honest... remember I don't commute to the City...left the forum March 20230 -
In that case there is the new Sirius Mk4 for a shade under £90 and 500 lumens/2 hours or the Knogg Blinder 3 with 300 lumens can be had for £40.

There are also new but unknown Macro Drives coming soon in 400/600 options.

I've got an old Hope Vision 2 that's apparently 480 lumens but never needed to run it that high. I'm sure most of the above will get the job done..0 -

I keep offering you money for your services and you keep turning it down
Exposure Joystick for me, all you need for commuting IMOBlog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0 -
I've used a Toro for the past 3 years, I'd never buy anything other than Exposure now. It just works.0

I've got a mk5 Strada, my commute involves a lot of unlit roads and I never feel the need to run it on full, so 800 lms is fine for me. The beam shape means I don't get flashed or shouted out and the flash mode is effective when you just need to be seen. I've got the remote but have only used it a few times, seems a bit unnecessary. I live near the factory and a colleagues son worked there in the repairs section so I managed to get a very nice discount. Unfortunately for me he's now in Australia so my supply chain may have dried up.0
-
Very tempted by the MK5 @ £215 from Tredz but curious how much better the MK6 will be. Thinking more general battery life on lower settings.
Oddly that's more than I've budgeted to build the winter bike itself0 -
tell me why i should justify £200 on a bike light? Are they really worth that much?"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

My opinion:
Very solidly built
Good design
No separate battery pack
Good battery life
3 output modes
Pulse mode is over a constant light
Easy to fit/remove each day
Solid mount
British company
I can just forget about it, it does what is says it will do..day in day out.0 -
I do wish they would spend less on the fancy zipped/moulded storage cases they come in though, and knock £20 off.0

The pulse mode on the Exposure lights is very good. Light is always on with a bright pulse, I now use the Joystick on my bars in daylight throughout the summer. I'm sure it cuts down on the number of people pulling out on me.0 -
With other lights I've always felt the need to have at least 2 lights in case of failure.
Yep, +10 -
I tried other lights prior to Exposure, including a couple of the early Magicshines.
All my Magicshines broke eventually plus I was fed up charging them inside a biscuit tin in the garage in case they exploded
I'm still using a Magicshine headtorch for off-road running in the Winter though, does worry me with it being strapped to my bonce an' that!0 -
I will admit that I do use a Flash and flare (the flash is on my lid) which are fine for city commuting, but like most and others now i will be using unlit NSL roads in the future.
But trying to justify the costs. Basically they work, last forever and i should just get one."If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

I ve primiarily bought them for winter Night time MTBing where them breaking would cause a real issue (what should be an hour long blast turns into a 2 hour long walk back down a dark hill in insufficient clothes). The main things that lights like Exposure give me is robustness and reliability. For example I dug out my Ay-ups (rememebr them) for a 24hr race last month. I ve not used them in 2 years but charged them up and they were faultless. That's where expensive lights are neccessary IME.
If you re commuting from central London to Clapham and the nearest Evans Cycles is not more than a 5 min push away then no, you don't need anything as expensiveWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Three output modes but in terms of output there are about 10 different options. I tend to run mine at about 60% as that's sufficient because the beam pattern makes such good use of the available light.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Agree with all that - but the price is still OTT. I get most of that from the Exposure Joystick which you can pick up from the Manufacturers for 79 quid
http://www.ultimatesportsengineering.com/exposure-lights/outlet-store
and can probably find much cheaper on the net.
If the strada was a little bit more than the joystick then I would have bought one - but it is well over twice the price. FTR - I cycle along pitchblack river-banks every night of the winter so I do use the light to see where I am going, not just to show drivers where I am.0 -

My comment was more aimed at Exposure as a manufacturer, not a specific model.0 -
Agree entirely then :-)0
