Power Meter

I bought a Stages last year to help me train for the Etape. I couldn't find anythibg to train on which was comparable to Tourmalet but I could find long, flat or undulating, stretches where I could try and maintain a 240W average for an hour and 45 minutes. That's what I needed to do to get up Tourmalet and training for a few weeks with a power meter gave me the confidence to know I could cope with Tourmalet and Hautacam.
I'm not suggesting that I absolutely needed a power meter but it certainly helped me focus my training and I don't regret buying it for a minute. I guess it comes down to a choice of how to spend whatever disposable income you have
This is when a power meter is totally worth it, you had a goal, the power meter was a means to achieve it.Trainer Road Blog: https://hitthesweetspot.home.blog/

I use gamin pedals. Had a problem with the first set but these have been replaced today under warranty so now I have two sets. What a shame. When racing I do not find the pm that useful as I race mostly on feel as looking at pm all the time means I am not keeping my eyes were I need too. What the pm does is help with training. I know straight way from my outputs and heart rate how fatigued I am and how hard to try that day. I also see when I am pushing to hard and then can back off but you can feel that anyway. It is mostly useful for me in tracking progress after a ride is done. That is the main reason why I have two now. I wouldn't power meters are essential but they are useful and I am still learning about using them.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Would love a power meter but just too pricey when it can only be used on one bike (I have four in regular use).
Will have to make do with heart rate like a pauper.0 -
I have tried to search internet, but I haven´t found if Stages power meters can connect with Polar V800? I would be happy if somebody have first hand experience... tnx0

From the looks of it, it only works with these http://www.polar.com/uk-en/products/accessories/keo_power_essential_bluetooth_smart0 -

Wonder if powertap / garmin will drop their prices due to this competition??0 -
This looks very interesting too, especially if you have a few bikes and don't want to shell out thousands or keep swapping cranks etc.

I'd rather pay for a proper PM than buy that junk. It's basically an anemometer measuring power - what a stupid idea. :?
Save your money and just use the Stava estimation.0 -

Have you read the DC Rainmaker article? The readings are almost identical to the other 3 PM's apart from a short section he rides on gravel. He doesn't seem to think it's junk.In some ways, the same is true here. There are indeed specific cases where the PowerPod isn’t quite perfect, but there’s also a lot of time (majority probably) when it’s very good. And there’s also cases like using PowerPod with indoor trainers that require usage of power curves – which can be tricky without exact calibration due to tire pressures, compared to a standard power meter. My past issues with the iBike have largely been in the head unit itself (price/functionality) rather than the algorithms used to generate power numbers. With the PowerPod, they kinda ‘solve’ my main concerns in that they’ve separated it out into a very interesting little device – I’m thrilled to see them do this. I think the device could actually be even more interesting if either of the standards bodies (i.e. ANT+ or BLE) got around to implementing some form of wind metrics that head units to consume in a standard way (and Velocomp says they’d whole-heartedly support that in an instant). In certain scenarios that additional data can provide for some really fascinating aero testing.
Will this be the device for everyone? No. But it’s definitely a device for many people at a price point that introduces people to power. And it’s certainly a far better device than some vaporware power meters that are out there as well for the same price. I can ride this product today, and show real data today, and understand exactly which situations it does well in. Plus, I love their use and simplicity of both the GoPro mount, as well as the setup and configuration. It’s sorta impossible to screw up getting power on your bike quickly.0 -

I'm interested in the nagative comments on the BePro - as for the price point and reviews seem more than worth a punt - what are the technical limitations you guys believe to make them not useful ?0

Have a look at DC Rainmakers review.
They actually seem far better than initial reviews. The biggest question mark seems to be over the long term durability.0 -
There are several good YouTube videos on how to use power meters.
Basically, you run some tests to find what wattage you can sustain for an hour. Then you use that number to avoid going much over it when climbing and riding into headwinds. This keeps you below the lactate threshold and in aerobic mode, which is more efficient than blowing out on a hill climb going into anaerobic mode. So you use it to pace yourself based on power output rather than speed or heart rate.
If you don't have a power meter, then you would be best to go by heart rate. The main problem with HR is that it does not respond quickly enough. With a wattmeter, you can keep your power constant before you screw up your HR.0 -

You can get a 4iii for $360 now- there is a coupon code from a dealer. I didn't do it as I don't want to be without my crank for two weeks so I just bought a Stages, and they would not let me self-install it.
As for the water issues with Stages, they already redesigned the enclosure and I have not ready of any problems with the redesign. Also so many people say they will fix any issues without hassle.0 -
Anyone know if there is a way I can get stages direct from US? Apart from face the dollar prices are much better I can't get the 386Evo version in UK which Stages have confirmed. Is there a way round it or do I need a friendly buyer in the States to do it for me?0

Yep I'm keeping an eye on eBay. Stages site won't let you on the shop section from a UK based ISP and won't ship to UK anyway. Annoying when they don't sell the model I need here.0
