Yellow Jersey Club
I'm reading this at the moment - Highly recommended. I started on Monday (only read on my commute) and I'm nearly finished
Some good memories, bits I didn't know and a good look at the Tour winners from last 40 years.
Cheap as chips on Amazon at moment too

Few things I learnt from the book
- Andy Schleck definitely believes he won the 2010 TdF
- He also thinks he's basically the winner of the 07 Giro
- Never realised that 89 was the only time the winners of the Tour, Vuelta and Giro of that year have all been on the podiumFckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
Added to wishlist...along with all the other books I'll probably never read! Although your recommendation of The Sports Gene was a cracking read.0

Grabbed the Kindle version yesterday, looking forward to it!0

Haha Schleck changed his tune then. He is on record saying the opposite for the first one.Contador is the Greatest0 -
He's only 30 he could still win a few more GTs if he wanted to0

Does he include Ullrich, Riis or Armstrong in the club? :twisted:It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0

Good for keeping decent relations with Contador0 -

Body buggered, mind just as much
That press conference he gave announcing his retirement was sad, even for the non-Schleck lovers eg me0 -

He does indeed.

It's a bit different when you have to see each other at work every day"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I take it that it's just about living yellow jerseys. Is Ferdi Kubler in it? He's still going, aged 96.

Just finished this, good points and bad points... Found some of the chapters on the riders you see less long form stuff written about (Sastre, Schleck, van Impe) and the Lemond and Wiggins pieces were as good as anything I've seen written about them.
The stuff about the more legendary winners though (Armstrong, Pantani, HInault etc) was lacking in any original insight, however (IMO). And the Indurain bit was a boring as the man himself.
To close on a positive (arf) I enjoyed the contrasting diet tips of Telekom's two winners
Riis: Train for 5 hours, have a bottle of fizzy water and three sleeping pills to stop you eating anything until the next morning.
Ullrich; Put a jar of nutella in the microwave and drink it with a straw."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Don't know how you can ride for 5 hours, not eat, and not feel unbearably sh!t afterwards.
And that has to be very bad for you, no matter who you are? You need some food to actually go on living...0 -

Sean Yates swore by monstrous long training rides, only an apple to eat, and then going to bed REALLY early to sleep off the hunger0 -

It's possibly a good personality test for cyclists. Which of the two approaches are you instinctively drawn to"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I think the vast quantities of EPO make that kind of behaviour easier to do without making yourself ill.0 -

As I understand it, it just increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. It doesn't allow you to do more on less food?0 -

Quicker recovery innit.
Can ride faster for longer without getting as tired.
Training with EPO is like being on a sh!t hot day every day without getting anywhere near as tired as you otherwise would. Less tired - less stress on body.
Apparently.
At least, that's my understanding.0 -

If you're riding even harder you burn even more energy though, and you will have used more of your energy reserves then not eating. I would have thought you'd be more likely to make yourself ill. Just a different way of looking at it. Anyway, it's only a chat point, not being scientific.0
