To those saying they're not really cycling glasses, well of course they're not, they're clearly aimed at the fashion market, you wouldn't realistically use them for cycling.

Rapha is simply trying to expand it's market beyond pure cycling stuff and into the casual/fashion market.

Dangerous strategy if u ask me......

They've been pursuing that particular strategy for a while. They have marketed clothes for use in the city for a few years now I think, and these glasses do sort of fit in with that.

They aren't marketing them as not being for cycling - it clearly talks about them being designed for on bike use.

The POC glasses aren't much less daft imho.

Breaking News - Rapha in fashion market!!!:lol: 8) Too funny.

The truth is that the stuff Rapha makes that will stand the test of time (in a bizarre twist of logic) is the fashion stuff. Like you never really see a market for retro bibs but retro jerseys (the more "designed" the better) is thriving. The Rapha stuff that people will want in the future (and want now) is the Paul Smith stuff and their other designer gear. Their "pure cycling stuff" will end up like everybody else's (Assos, Castelli etc) pure cycling stuff being used and thrown away as it's superseded by newer materials.

There's absolutely no point in Rapha launching shades to compete with Oakley & Co in the pure sports market. Like there's no point in Rapha launching some beats headphones. Other people do that stuff better. And, actually, I think it's the on and off the bike stuff that Rapha do (pretty much) uniquely well amongst the bigger brands.

ETA - Assos launched some shades. Anybody got a pair? I do - they're utterly brilliant and technically superb - a masterclass in ergonomic eyewear. They look ridiculous and cost the earth which is why only me and the idiot who got done for doping cocaine (FFS) wear them. Leave that stuff to others.

I get confused by these threads to be honest. Rapha has a very clear brand strategy, top notch products backed by top notch customer service at a premium price.

Whilst we may not like all the marketing spin, (some of it grates for me), they deliver against that strategy very consistently IMHO. The glasses look like another top notch product (carl zeiss lenses anyone...) at a price that's comparable with other premium products. The only real issue I can see is whether you like the style or not.

The funny thing about that Braun iron thing is that it isn't really very funny. Rapha is a wide open goal and that one's sailed a couple of feet over the bar. Humour, done well, contains strong elements of truth - that's just a lazy attempt.

i think it's alluding to the fact that rapha fan boys are self obsessed ponces more concerned with style over substance.

    I could be wrong though.

I admit it's probably not high brow enough for you rapha boys.

I'm as happy to take the pi$$ out of Rapha fan bois as the next person. But, if you're going to the trouble of mocking up something like the iron thing, at least do it well...

ETA - I was thinking earlier in the thread how these threads are like Top Gear threads. The other similarity with Top Gear is this lazy humour. I know / let's smash a caravan...

    That's well out of order

I did think that they'd be more cycling specific. Like the goddawful Assos ones.

I'm happy with my Oakleys. Yes they are expensive, but if you look after them they will last you years.

I did try on the new Cav glasses - but not convinced they're any better than the radars.

I still think the Mumbos were the best Oakleys.

All I thought was that it seemed like a bit of a low blow considering they created Rouleur and then sold it to someone else. They're now recreating Rouleur under another title and probably aiming to steal their customers; sneaky!

The Assos ones are what happens when you design entirely for function. They are in every way better functionally than any pair of Oakleys I've worn (and I've had a few) - they just look like the love child of Joan Collins and Dennis Taylor's glasses. But, on the bike, they are utterly brilliant.

I was going to send them back then I realised that I'm a middle-aged man in Lycra and a polystyrene hat, with a padded crotch riding a bicycle and I figured that the glasses weren't going to make things any better or worse.

  • I have two pairs of these, the tortoiseshell and the pink lens option and having used ray-ban and persol I can positively say that the Rapha Classic glasses are the best sunglasses I've ever owned, they are sublimely comfortable and have the most amazing optics in them, i wear them when commuting in and around Oslo and when I come to London and they stay firmly placed onto my face with no shaking while going over cobbles etc. The arms can be altered for wider shaped heads or small shaped heads which makes them all the more comfortable and personalise-able. Yes they are £200 a pair, but they are without a doubt the exact piece of eyewear I've been looking for all this time.

And for the record, yes, they do pair rather nicely with the B&O headphones ;)
