Rapha sunglasses - discuss :-)

I came here hoping to read some commentary on the latest rapha product. Sadly lacking, thus making my afternoon a little less entertaining than I was hoping for.
http://pages.rapha.cc/stories/the-rapha-classic-sunglasses
My 2ps worth is that I wouldn't wear them on the bike as I don't really understand the retro/not entirely optimal look for road cycling. I think they look ok for general use though but then they're mega expensive.

I don't know whats going on with Rapha these days.
So many good products, then....crazy Brevet designs....some questionable summer jersey and baselayers....and now these ridiculous sunglasses?! I don't know if they have had a change of creative director or what, but I hate all the new crazy stuff (maybe I'm just too old!) .
Still hoping to get a hardshell for the winter months, but other than that ill look elsewhere.0 -
And I thought Oakleys were expensive...
But this means I'm on trend! I've been wearing my non-sporty prescription sunglasses on the bike so I can read the garmin / maps and see to fix a puncture etc. I'm probably the most fashionable old git in the lanes of Suffolk at the moment!0 -
They look great, although not sure for cycling.
But I like the classic look, just awaiting delivery of my prescription Persol glasses tomorrow.Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

After all the hype and anticipation, they aren't that distinctive...0

You sir are a classy ba$tard. Persol glasses are superb.0 -
I really like them but as said above, not really for wearing on the bike. They've got that Ray Ban, tortoiseshell thing going on. Very SS15.0

Seeing those has made my day lol.
Would look great with a set of African hair sheep leather B&O pink corded Rapha headphones 8)
Rapha and B&O are a great pairing though. Style over substance masters.0 -
200 quid?
Why?0 -
200 quid?
Why?
Because somewhere there's somebody thinking "200 quid? I'd like a pair of those!" We live in a more or less free market economy. Companies sell things to make a profit. Companies like Rapha work hard to create and maintain their brand and the loyalty of their customers, and the extortionate pricing is just a part of the illusion of exclusivity.
I was in Milan for a meeting a few weeks ago and spotted a pair of sunglasses in one of the designer shop windows, Versace I think, a snip at €3500
As a Yorkshireman it's all wasted on me though. I don't mind paying more for things if they are better made, offer some technical benefit, even look nicer, but £200 for pretty ordinary sunglasses just because they have the Rapha logo? Not for me.0 -
Rapha is comical at best lately,
There are much nicer kits coming out of other brands take Volero, MAAP, Bernard, and Panache just to name a few.
And if you want retro cool then why would you look any further than Danny Shane and the like,
One day the cycling world will wake up and realise they've been had.One plays football, tennis or golf, one does not play at cycling0 -

It did cross my mind that maybe an anti lycra Euro Lottery winner set up Rapha take the pi55 out of roadies.
Investing millions to make more millions, but with the ultimate goal of releasing increasingly more absurdly expensive products to see just how far roadies would bite :shock:0 -
Persol are great. And, if you look around, at least cheaper, and, if you look even harder, half the price.
Oakley make great shapes including tortoiseshell.
These are unnattractive, IMO, and silly prices.
That said, if they can get their inevitable Pro issue glasses to be a similar price, that will compete well against Oakley. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I don't think they are bad, would have to try them on, I wouldn't pay £200 for glasses but I've bought Oakleys when I could have got perfectly good sunglasses from Superdrug for a fraction of the price so if people want these why not. As for Rapha pricing - maybe I've just become used to them but they seem to have fewer items than they used to which make you wonder if they really are having a laugh.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Not liking the look of them at all. No doubt they're top quality and all that but can't imagine forking out for them.0
-
Sure, you can get decent (non cycling, let's not pretend you'd wear these on a serious cycle) sunglasses for around £100, but much like standard ophthalmic glasses you get a lot more choice of something that bit nicer when you spend around £200 (and with normal glasses you double the price by the time you get decent lenses).
At least they're an alternative to Ray Ban ... If I hadn't just bought some PS tortoise shell sunglasses I'd have bought these Rapha ones ...Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.0 -
It pained me to fork out about 150 Euros for a pair of Maui Jim's last year, but at least I've got a superbly made set of glasses that have excellent polarized lenses. If many of Palma's yacht crew's wear them, they can't be too bad.
But nearly 300E for a fashion accessory? No thanks.0 -

I've a pair of £20 Superdry ones. Picked up at the Airport. I hate the company. But I cannot tell any difference between them and my Oakley Radar. And they are great for being at the beach, in the car, walking down the street. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Half like the tortoise shell ones ... Forget the others.
They ain't cycling sunnies in my mind, I'll hold out for the "pro team" sunglasses launch ... Gotta happen hasn't itStill thinking of something clever to say!0 -
After the B&O collaboration, I was hoping for some Persols with a little touch of Rapha pink somewhere, not for me this time...VO2 Max - 79 ml/kg/min

Must admit ... Went to the Rapha store in Machester recently. Had a nice latte followed by a proper browse around. I checked out all the new gear and .... Bought a Classic jerseyStill thinking of something clever to say!0 -
Don't like them at all, just don't look like cycling glasses like the Oakley radars/jawbreakers look more like sitting outside a coffee shop all day!0
-
it feels wrong to really criticise them that much, because theyve delivered exactly what it says on the tin, they are "classic" style '60s sunglasses, they even mention Persol as a style cue, theyd look fine on the beach, St Tropez, Monaco, south of France.
on a bike, well unless its a Vespa or Im pootling around casual like...nope Ill stick with my Oakleys0 -
Like them? Buy a pair if you have the money
Don't like them, don't.
Same as every other product then.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.0 -
To those saying they're not really cycling glasses, well of course they're not, they're clearly aimed at the fashion market, you wouldn't realistically use them for cycling.
Rapha is simply trying to expand it's market beyond pure cycling stuff and into the casual/fashion market.
Dangerous strategy if u ask me......0 -

Why have you opened a thread titled 'Rapha Sunglasses - discuss' if you genuinely feel that way?
Because the contents are entirely predictable, the same as every other Rapha thread.
Some will see them as great
Some will see them as overpriced
Some will see them as a triumph of marketing over content
Rinse and repeat.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.0 -

This doesn't make sense, if the content of this thread was entirely predictable to you then why would you feel the need to open it? Unless you weren't entirely confident that you had predicted the contents? And had a burning desire to confirm your suspicions... Then one of two things happened, you either affirmed your suspicions and in some fit of self proclamation you had to announce how well you'd done or upon reading the comments you became so consumed with rage that you had to put the Rapha bashers back in their box by showing how pointless this thread was in the first place?!
I suspect a little of both. One plays football, tennis or golf, one does not play at cycling0 -

These are Schrodinger's Cat threads. If you honestly don't open any Rapha thread and expect the responses you see above you haven't read many.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.0
