Stomach cramps/stitch.

A week or two ago on a chain gang/club ride toward the end I started getting painful stitch/cramp (from now I'll call it stich). Usually down my right side but not always. Managed to hold on for the finish.
I expected it to be a breathing issue, short breaths and so on.
Since I've been trying to altar my breathing to longer, deeper breaths, sitting upright more but as the efforts increase the stitch starts to re appear.
Last time I dropped my stem was 2 months ago and was 5mm. This has only started he past two weeks.
Reason I'm posting is I'm supposed to be entering my first race tomorrow which is 2/3/4 cat. No expecting to be good enough regardless, I don't want to drop off for stitch when I know my legs have a chance of keeping up. I just cannot work out what is causing it and if there's any quick way of avoiding it/treating it in a race situation.
I don't really want to raise my stem the day before a race as its what I've been training on.
Has anyone else suffered from similar?
I have spent the past couple days "Googling" but it generally states it's caused by short shallow breathing a few large, slow inhales/exhales should cure it. Which doesnt seem to be working.
I've even had it, an hour after a ride just walking the dog I can feel it coming back.
Thanks for any help or advice.

I suffered the same thing a while back and eventually it turned out to be an inflamed gall bladder. Strange thing is that it only happened on the bike! Worth getting checked out.0
