  • The issue with constituency size was one of my bugbears since I heard that one GE Scottish constituencies were on average significantly smaller in registered voter size than English ones. This was either just before or after the vote in parliament giving Scotland the right to get or vote for devolved powers.

You original point was that no other countries have separate secondary education streams. Rubbish

Apart from Germany, we also have Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, Denmark, Czech Republic, to name but a few.

Time to admit you're wrong and move on

Haha your quite the card aren't you? Repeat bull S and it becomes true ? Not quite, that wiki link doesn't support your cliamsat all, what it does show is a very well developed vocational system, which we don't have, would explain how all the eu trades people find it so easy to get work in the UK.
When May announces similar you ll have my support, education policy should be above politics.

If you take out a few exceptions then Scotland and England have pretty much the same constituency size*. The exceptions are mostly islands where it just doesn't make sense to split them up any differently - Orkney, Shetland and Eileanen an Iar (Western Isles) are much smaller than average, but the Isle of Wight is much bigger.

So an eileanach has a vote worth up to 5 times more than other voters.

The whole point of the boundaries being changed is to try and even things up - hence the howls of protest from those (chiefly Labour) who benefit the most from the existing inequalities. The idea that it's some sort of a Tory stitch-up is as contemptible as it is absurd.

*In Wales it's actually much smaller, I don't know what their excuse is
  • You're right. English median constituency sizes are only 5% bigger than Scotland's and 27% bigger than Welsh median constituency size.

The historical figures I remember being quoted back in early Blair days was 76k for England and 56k for Wales and Scotland constituencies. I've not found anywhere giving median.constituency sizes for the nations going back in time to past GEs. Would be interested in seeing that from say the ONS or other respected statistical body.
  • It could be done based on more than just the electoral register though. It shouldn't only be registered voters that are represented by an MP. Children, for example.

Can't help thinking this wouldn't change things that much from the realignment that will happen.

But Corbyn has beat them to it. He even has his own list of people that have pi55ed him off. Come the revolution...

Apparently you can get on the list by telling Diane Abbott to fcuk off.
  • Let's hope the electoral commission get on the list and split her constituency up into Corbyn's and Thornberry's. Would be good to see the hypocritical, Corbyn attack dog be retired. Would give her more time to rant on tv though. That can only be a good thing as it'll show up how bankrupt their political ideology is.

  • Don't think you've proven anything with that link Mambo. One link doesn't win the argument you've not proven anything. Now answer my question!

Insert quotes from up thread to labour the point and dodge the thorny issue of OECD director of education doesn't believe grammars work as well as their supporters claim.

In the view of one individual in the OECD which is spreading itself rather thinly trying to cover all OECD countries. It takes no account of the latest proposals, in particular the quotas for disadvantaged pupils.

Also not everyone agrees with the OECD on education, far from it actually:

Why is it no surprise that the Corbyn team has compiled a list of those who have dissed the dear leader? Or be incompetent enough to release it by accident :)

I only saw the first couple of minutes, they were very quickly into the topic of grammar schools and knocking them due to children being stigmatised for failing the 11+. So I turned over.

Ta - found a clip on the net. Belter. We know that the two wings of the party hate each other, but takes something for it to spill over like that on prime time BBC :)

I'm not convinced that giving me a say in choosing Labour Cabinet members and policies is that great an idea from a Labour perspective :D

Although a certain forumite's favourite politician did lead Labour to two consecutive election defeats himself.

Corbyn appoints a shadow HO Minister responsible for covering abuse and domestic violence who has a conviction for domestic violence. Can't be said that they don't have the necessary experience can it?
In this case it happens to be a woman. I wonder if there will be the same furore from the usual suspects over this appointment as there would if Corbyn had appointed a wife beater?

Do you work for the Mail? Champion was very much responsible for bring the Rotherham child abuse scandal to the nations attention, few MPs have so much for this cause.

i have had some experience of Miss Champion and she came across as a caring and passionate MP on the subject of child abuse.

"Both Miss Champion, a vocal campaigner against domestic abuse, and Mr Hoyland, a best-selling author and mountaineer, received police cautions"

So she had an argument with her husband? we dont know the details or his past abuse of her.

a female friend of mine got a caution for spiting in her partners face, he got nothing, the back drop is that she was scared shitless of him, he d beat her for many years before finally leaving him, despite repeatedly reporting his abuse to the Police, they always did nothing, he would always dent and there were no witnesses.
in this spitting instance, he went to grab her (over an argument about their 2 children, one conceived after he raped her) and for reasons unknown, she spat at him, he smiled, backed off and went straight to the Police, she admitted what she d done, was she in the wrong? yes

try and have some understanding before you jump to conclusions on subjects you clearly have no experience off.
