Must haves, what's 'cool' what's not? Help needed. :)

Eye protection is a good idea - flys, mud and grit hurt!
Decent fitting comfy helmet.
RRP Enduroguard for the front is a good investment.
Camelbak (or similar) with decent multitool, pump & tube.
Pedals from Superstars, Moove or Exotic (Carbon Cycles) are decent.
Full finger gloves - Fox Dirt Paws are good._______________

Cool
1X, 650b(pfft), bright colours, hatred of Fox, hatred of the front mech, black, wide rims, stems 50mm or shorter, bars 760mm or wider, dropper posts, softshell kneepads without shin protection.
Uncool
Anything not mentioned above.
Is that a hatred of Fox suspension or clothing?Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Handlebar lockouts are not cool, necessary or even good. I have put three in the bin which came with various forks.
.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Thanks for all the replies. Happy with how I have the bike now and took a lot of your advice. Well, the serious advise anyway.
Kept the bars that came with the bike, they are a riser bar but not as big as the others. The pedals are the biggest thing. Went for the nukeproofs and they are flipping amazing! So thanks for the people advising on those. Also loving the little front mudguard, enduroguard is the one I got, but so one mentioned another brand that got me looking.
Have to say I'm not sold on the dropper post or handlebar lockout. Have seen a few in shops and it's just adding more on the bars and more wires. I'm fine reaching down to the lockout if needed.
Thanks again, all really helpful stuff.Daddy, Husband, Designer, Biker, Gamer, Geek

But what are the 'must haves' these days? Biking is, in part, looking the part too, so what's cool, what should I avoid in my 30's?
Which is why I don't.
