B'Twin Rockrider 560 - Good first bike for £500?

Hey folks,
I'm after a new mountain bike after many years out of the saddle, and the B'Twin Rockrider 560 has caught my eye. I understand it's the newest version of the Rockrider 8.1, which I believe was well received. If not though, can anyone else recommend a decent bike for around £500? Perhaps even a bit more if it's from Tredz, as they're offering £60 off if I spend £500 or more.
Cheers!

Buy the Rockrider - you wont beat it for value. In fact the only bikes that even come close are Voodoo from Halfords or whatever GoOutdoors call their own brand bike. Even with £60 off, Tredz etc wont come close.0

Get the RR, Tredz would be having to do about 50% off to compete.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Cheers folks! I just realised the Rockrider has 26" wheels, whereas I was ideally after 27.5" or 29". Can anyone recommend a decent 27.5/29" bike in the same price range?0

Well to be honest, not really. I've just heard that the 27.5/29" wheels offer good performance when rolling over obstacles, which sounds pretty good to me. Are they worth it?0 -
29" wheels will roll over obstacles better, but not as nimble when manoevering. 27.5 are kind of in between so maybe the best of both worlds but I wouldnt choose a lesser 27.5 bike over a really good 26 one.
If you want 650b then the Boardmans are worth a look: http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/m ... ed-edition
Although the higher model would be worth the extra:

These are now selling for £340 in the Decathlon sale - I've just ordered one for my oldest kid. In a 650b you'd be paying double that and probably a bit more than that for a branded bike with lower spec kit. In fact I've been looking at branded used bikes with lower spec for more money.0

The rockrider 560 is certainly on par with everything I was looking at 2nd hand for 4-500 quid. Kitted out, its probably a tiny bit heavy say compared to a similar 26" rockhopper or hardtail Stumpjumper. I think the frame is more on par with the heavier hardrock. But this bike is Carrera money.
I also managed to haggle the sale price on mine down to 300. eldest is well pleased and fairly fast on it. I think they are almost sold out now.
My guess is they are switching to 650b for next year hence the sell off.
Interestingly the Decathlon service and set-up isn't bad, certainly better than the halfords bikes I had to reassemble.0 -
If you want best bang for your buck, I think a 26er will give you the best value, weight (smaller wheels) and fun factor.0

Eagerly waiting for mine to arrive!!!
They did tell me it's due on the 27th, so that's fine. I assume as older models they are in a warehouse somewhere and need retrieving, putting together, packing and checking before they go out. Fair enough, I'm keeping patient. 8)0 -
First post here so hello everyone.
I'll be going out for my first mountain biking session in 3 weeks time. Used to do a lot of off reading many many years ago.
I have a basic Raleigh bike now, I've been told it should be ok for the trail I'll be going on the first time but I am rather tempted to get a new bike for then. The RR560 is looking good.
If I do take the plunge what size should I go for? I'm 6'2, would the L or XL be better?0 -
Only answer is to sit on one.I don't do smileys.

I thought that night be the answer. Unfortunately no stores down here in Wales. Any other bikes for a similar price I could look at?0

Where in Wales are you?
Decathlon have a shop in Wednesbury, near Birmingham. It's easy to get to, just off the M6.“Life has been unfaithful

I've bought one without trying and gone for L. I'm 6', 32" inside leg (generally when buying jeans..). Their info for the bike is:
S (1.55m-1.65m)
M (1.66m-1.75m)
L (1.76m-1.85m)
XL (1.86m-2m)
So at 6'2" that is 1.88m so fits their XL listing but only by 2cm, and only just outside their recommendation for an L by 3cm. So I guess your height will work with either a L or an XL so do your prefer a longer or shorter reach? The XL has a 2cm longer reach than the L, with a longer head and seat tubes. Frame geometry:
Bit easier for me as they sold out of M's, so it was either an L or nothing, and at 1.82m that would seem about right. I'd always try a bike first, but I have taken a bit of a punt on this one given I've not owned an MTB before, but know I go slightly smaller with road bikes than my height always suggests.0 -

I live in Wales, quite a trek up to Birmingham. If I'd realised I was going to be buying a bike I could have popped in to have a look the last time I went to Stoke to see my sister.0 -

Thanks, I'll measure myself properly and see what the site suggests.
No idea about reach and this will be the first bike I've bought myself. Is that arm reach to the handles? I have quite long arms so the longer one I'd guess.0 -
Can't help with sizing as my purchase was for my kid. I normally ride a Medium full sus /road bike, some times a Large hard tail and small/Medium TT. I sat on the Small RR and I thought it came up quite big.
As for the ordering processes. The estimated delivery is really the date they intend to ship. I did click and collect - ordered on the 12 and was expected for 17th, actually arrived 20th at the store.
It comes with free lights and spds - I managed to blag some flat pedals along with some cheeky discount for being kept waiting.
The store said they were amazed I'd got one given how quickly they were selling out.
I mean £300 for a hard tail with air forks, sram hydraulic brakes and 30 speed Deore + group set.
Its just a tiny bit heavy next to my other MTBs, but then they cost 3-5 times more at least.0 -

Yeah, but where in Wales?
The other nearest store is probably Reading. Easy to get to by train if you don't fancy the drive.“Life has been unfaithful

Oops, haha, I thought I'd put Swansea in there. I live in Swansea.0

Well the XL is out of stock now anyway. Is it likely to come back in stock at that price?0
-
Unlikely. They are moving on to 650b wheel size.0
-
I wonder if 29ers will start going out of fashion soon.0
