  • Hi guys, thanks for replying again.

I've been working on this again this morning and I feel like I'm making progress but just not quite there yet.

The reason I was messing with the H screw is because I couldn't figure out how the guys in the videoes were getting the chain on the large sprocket as my deraiileur just refused to go past the middle. So I adjusted it to it's outer extreme this morning and managed to get it on the large ring but then it wouldn't go back to the middle or smallest

So I met it halfway and now I have some kind of success. I can change from the smallest ring up to the largest but when changing down it grinds like crazy and won't go onto the middle ring, if I change gear down again it will snap onto the smallest ring with a bit of a bang. I can still change back up much smoother though.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm quite a slow learner and because it's frustrating not having the bike fully functioning it's making it worse. I really do appreciate your help.

  • Hi cooldad, thanks for replying.

I have tried to read Park Tools but I find it a little difficult to follow ( due to there being no pictures  )

For instance, what does this mean exactly:

'It is generally a good idea to lubricate the pivot point of the front derailleur with a light lubricant. The cable inner wires should also be lubricated. If you have loosen the inner wire pinch bolt, lubricate those threads as well. When tightening this pinch bolt, secure to approximately 30-40 inch-pounds. This is about 10 pounds of effort hold a wrench 3 inches from the bolt."

Does that mean I should be using a pair of pliers to pull the string through the bolt that tightens it? On the Bike Radar video he doesn't mention any tensioning of wire.

Just pull the inner why through finger tight before doing up the pinch bolt, pull too hard and you pretension it and then it will pull the mech out a small amount when you have finished.

  • Sorry I forgot to update till today. I ended up biting the bullet or should I say banana and getting a full monkey service from Brighton's BikeMonkey. Bike came back looking like new with the gears smooth as silk. It was £60 well spent, so much stress relief!

My bike is dirty again now so no point posting a pic.

Sorry I couldn't follow your very good advice and I'd like to thank you all again for providing it. I think it's a task I would have to be physically shown how to do.
