The pace has been so high for the first 50km that even riders like Intxausti have been dropped already and are 1 minute down.

Tinkoff Saxo are evidently determined that a break will not form this early on.

Interesting. Astana managed to get Paolo Tiralongo in the break of the day. Him, Contador won't chase down. My pick for the stage win #giro

Too many PTP picks to fit a chart. Favs Gerrans and Gilbert. 3 picks in the break: Betancur, Hesjedal & Slagter.

Hopefully ellisonde takes it. He's not kicked on as expected since his stage win at the vuelta, so would be nice for him. Plus he's on team my man's feeder squad.

Moinard having a good race as well - 19th overall and rode strongly on that Spezia stage

Was a big fan of Ellisonde when he first came on the scene but it seems he is struggling to make any sort of an impact.

Maybe he needs a new team. Or some confidence.

Ooo wee little Kenny Elissonde, I should have had him on Team My Little Men. Damn.

Anyway go Kenny! And jumbo effort from the not little Kruijswijk.

Are you really Malcolm Tucker? Still that is a lovely turn of phrase, I might borrow it on occasion.

Break brought back to under 3 minutes

Tinkoff sent Paulinho up the road earlier, now Astana doing the same for Cataldo. Been given the day off, or do the GC guys have plans for that last steep climb?

And it would deserve it. The can break your arm with their beaks you know. Or is it your nose with their wing ? I can never remember.

Betancur's favourite sportsperson is Alejandro Valverde.

This might be the most interesting thing about today's stage and now I don't feel so bad about being mean about Carlos' love of the pies.

Is it just me or is this a new thing that the teams are all grouped together so neatly it the peloton?

Don't worry, you've just missed Saxo having a bit of lunch and Matt Stephens proving through commentary that he's surprisingly not actually annoying when you can't see his face.

    (It's not buffering for me)

Nothing significant is going to happen today of course. (Fingers crossed I'm wrong there).

I'll take that back about Stephens, he's talking rubbish about corners having potential affect on Contador's fake injury.

Contador, Porte, Landa going with him.

    Uran gone again.
