I'm surprised but like I said before, there are huge differences in opinion about the best option, surgical or non surgical. There are two recent very well respected studies which claim non surgical is equally effective without the high risk of infections and blood clots due to poor blood supply, particularly to the lower "bony" part of the tendon. http://www.udel.edu/PT/PT%20Clinical%20Services/journalclub/sojc/04_05/apr05/wallace.pdf this is one of them and there's another from Exeter University which agrees with the non surgical/ accellerated rehab route.

The traditional method was non weight bearing and an equinus cast (toes down) for 6-8 weeks and that had high re rupture rates compared to surgery.

Fo info I am 53 and have (or had!) similar or maybe slightly more activity levels to you, one moderate/long ride on the weekend and 2/3 turbo sessions in the week, squash sometimes and also some sporadic runs, golf and regular dog walking. Who knows which is really best, I guess a lot depends on the nature and location of the rupture and quality of the surgical repair!

I guess time will tell if I've made the right choice, my rupture was quite low down and of a nature you could see it with out a scan.
What tricks do you have to avoid eating ones body weight in food due to boredom.

No tips apart from will power

I've put on around 3-4 pounds but that includes over Christmas so not too bad but it's tough. Going back to work quickly helps because I only eat what I take in with me, (not a lot) better than fighting temptation all day.

I've been signed off work for 8 weeks, although I suspect I can do part of my job. But as I can't drive I can't get there, so I'm stuck at home.
