Through much of South East England:

"Adults and children with lung problems, adults with heart problems, and older people, should avoid strenuous physical activity. People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often."
I'm going to avoid the main roads in London as much as possible that day. it's worth noting, however, that people in cars generally breath in more fumes than those on Bikes.

Also worth noting that a lot of people reading here don't live in SE England either0 -
As a recently outed asthmatic that's really useful info, thanks....0

I heard this on the radio earlier, their advice was:
1. Stay away from busy roads (fumes)
2. Don't exert oneself too much
3. Take extra precautions for elderly
There wasn't a 4th one suggesting that perhaps people should leave their precious cars at home for one single fecking day. Talk about blaming the victims.
We have such a long way to go.0 -

Took the canal path this morning... didn't notice any Beijing style pollution... sounds like a lot of bollox in the absence of anything to say about the electionsleft the forum March 20230

It seems that the only low area in Cumbria is Ennerdale valley and perhaps the Loweswater one judging by the small fork of green there. How can they be so precise about those tiny pockets being lower than the surroundings?
Anyway, do we really need a map to tell us there's more polution in London and the south east than the a lot of Scotland? I love the morning Radio 4 programme that explained the source of the problem being pollution from mainland Europe combining with our own pollution. Evil foreign pollution combining with our own nice English pollution perhaps? Do you think R4 in the morning are drifting UKIP??? Afterall there;s politics in everything.0 -
R4 is fodder for middle aged middle class people, who wistfully pine for times where you could have a few sherries before driving home and who's entire 'comfortable' pension relies on constant inflation of house prices.0

Very noticeable last night and this morning.
And a lot less bikes out, despite the very nice weather.0 -

So do you listen then? It sounds like your post is based on experience of what you like. Hard to work out ages on here sometimes so take no offence by this.0 -

I like radio 4 - I reckon one can get an education simply from listening to it (including the Archers for an agricultural perspective). And I suppose I do rely on constant inflation of house prices as well. :oops:Ridley Fenix SL0 -

I'm 27.
Don't like listening to it. Have had to during car rides with parents etc, though they eventually tire of the middle aged chat too.0 -

Bilge.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -

I can't stand R4 and must count as nearly middle aged (48 - 50 is the new 30 by the way).
Still lots of people cycling here, despite the pm10 being at 2.5 times what the UK class as very high pollution levels!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

Ah if I accused radio 1 of being young person noise full of verbs and nouns I don't understand you wouldn't accuse me of being ageist. ( I do understand btw , but just making the point).
Calm down .0 -
Indeed not, that's not ageist its a sign of being mature and cultured.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Is early 40s middle aged? BTW my other main pre-set channel is Radio 1. On my DAB or online it is R1extra. The BBC asian network actually has some good stuff on it too (got into modernish Bangra when at school in Blackburn and some modern Asian music is really good).
So I bet you appreciate us oldies muscling in on you young folk stations too. I actually like the mix of inane chatter from R1 and R1 extra mixed in with pipe and slippers R4 chat. Takes allsorts doesn't it (just none of them with liquourice in them).0 -
Early 40's isn't middle aged, no, that's somewhere in the 50's now!
Personally I like R5 live.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
I listen to the today programme on R4 most mornings, i'm 38.
R4 is the best place for radio documentaries (especially on science).
Oh, the Infinite Monkey Cage is brilliant.0 -

Personally I like R5 live.
Average male expectancy in the UK is 77.88.
Mid age is 38.94.
It is downhill from there. Make the most of it.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Was a bit blurgy in London this am, but I was on a boris bike (off to watch FFC play out the string this evening, a task that will certainly require far too many sharpeners to ride home afterward), so I probably just noticed more of it.PBlakeney wrote:The Rookie wrote:Early 40's isn't middle aged, no, that's somewhere in the 50's now!

Excellent, I have .02 more years of youth! (Although I do have the Today Programme on in the background every morning)UndercoverElephant wrote:As a cyclist I find the phrase, "It's all downhill from here!", supremely edifying.

Is it still bad? Do I have an excuse to go to the pub instead of riding home?0
