I'll let you know about the 4700-just ordered a groupset, just need to decide whether to put it on my felt f75 which I have up for sale or a choice between a Dolan Preffisio or Ribble 7005 sportive-both same price.

Groupset arrived, looks a dam site better than old Tiagra-might have to send it back though, accidentally ordered a version that came with a long cage rear mech and a huge 32 tooth cassette-that's the only thing I'm not sure about putting on my bike-only 4 teeth less than my inner ring.

Send it over to the other guy who's looking for smaller gears ;)

I now have the Tiagra 4700 groupset on my new CaadX (so can't comment on the brakes) but have some experience with the gears.

The hoods feel nice- pretty much the same as the new 105 hoods and they do seem to feel nicer in my hands than the old 105 levers I have on the road bike, but that could be personal preference.

The new 4700 can do 3 downshifts with one full swing of the brake lever, and changing down gears has a very light action- lighter than the old 105 with fresh Jagwire race cables. However, because it can do up to 3 downshifts in the range of motion it is very easy to accidentally shift down 2 gears at once, or more likely put the chain between cogs by accident which means there is a 'clunk' as the chain moves back to where you wanted it in the first place.

The upshifts to smaller sprockets is fine- it is very quick when you release the lever but you need to release the lever to actuate- the old 105 is faster as it actuates as soon as the lever is thrown beyond the 'click' without having to remove pressure from the paddle first.

The front ring changing is great. Even with non Shimano chainrings the shifting is very smooth and light changing into the big ring, and changing down is fine. The new mech design with the long lever arm works a treat.

Unfortunately they have made the pull ratios the same as the 11 speed shifters, so you can't mix and match with old 10 speed kit anymore. It's probably to do with the re-design of the dérailleurs for the better shifting.

I'd say it is superior to the old 105, and probably feels very similar to the new 105 (I haven't tried it yet) but doubt the gear changes are quite as quick.

My experience in groupsets extents to 5700, 6700 and now 4700. I would agree that the new Tiagra is better than 10 speed 105, however is worse than 10 speed Ultegra. I can't comment on the 11 speed variants as I haven't used them.

Agree with 105 5700 front mech being noisy when changing down, I'm using 5700 10 speed but building a new all rounder and thinking about Tiagra 4700-is it much better than the 5700 105 I'm using? Or same as.

Don't know about the shifting but the brakes will be inferior to 5700

100% a*** about face - the newer dual pivot brakes are considerably better.
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D

In my experience it is considerably better than 5700 105 and the 4700 brakes are much better and crisper than 5700. I would take 4700 over 5700 all day long.

Just installing Tiagra 4700 on my bike....where the hell do the gear cable go in the shifters? Instructions from Shimano of no use whatsoever. Getting annoyed!!!

Download a copy of the DM-ST0002-04-ENG.pdf document, pages 9-13 covers shift cable installation.
    Under the heading ST-4700 http://si.shimano.com/#seriesList/19

Cable goes into the right hand side (as you look at it from a riding position) then pokes out the left and towards the bars and clipped into place by the little plastic bit. It is quite far up the STi perhaps you haven't peels the hoods back sufficiently?

    Only a 20 mile review,
So much better than 105 5700, no big clonk changing from big ring to small, rear changing much smoother, braking-changed the one piece blocks to cartridge as they were so big they rubbed on my tyres-more powerful stopping than 5700.
Hoods more comfortable, I never felt the 5700 quite fitted my hand shape.
Looks much prettier too and that's what counts :D
Not sure how long the cassette will last as it looks like it's made from tin foil, that's my only gripe.
So anyone looking at upgrading or wanting a new groupset without going 11 speed, try 4700-it's actually quite good.

My only issue so far is that I'm having lots of trouble getting the front mech to shift to the big ring cleanly. I get it configured so it does, then a few weeks later it stops working. User error I'm sure.

The 4700 FD seems to be very sensitive to cable tension. Seems to need more tension than other FDs I've used. And on my new bike the higher cable tension seems to have stopped the trim function working. :?
