Anyone know who might be making these ?

(like Giro do the Rapha shoes)

I quite fancy the tri shoes - seem decent value.

PX acquired Carnac last year. Coincidence? Probably.

The shoes look good though. Just need a few good reviews and a 50% off promotion and I might be tempted.
  • The prices do seem a bit steep for planet x brand and an unknown quantity. Especially given what else you can get for that kind of money if you shop around. I have no doubt they will come down in price quite a lot very soon though so if you want some I would hang fire a bit.

After a bit of googling I think the sole on the cheaper 2 pairs looks identical to a Spiuk road shoe to me.

(I thought it had a familiar look to it; I see my son's spiuk shoes every time I cross the landing)

And ditto for the carbon soled ones; dead ringer for the Spiuk equivalents.

And the boa type dials look identical too.

So you're implying that "ex-international pro tour rider Jamie Burrow" did little else than drink coffee and negotiate the change of graphics from Spiuk to Planet X?! ;)

If he had stuck some stars on the side then he could have had that Anna bird off the cycle show accusing him of plagarism
  • Hmm, the PX top model has a hell of a lot more in common with the Sidi Wire for a start. The Spiuk has no ankle box at all. So a pretty major difference there.

  • And hey, let's face it, these have got to be the best looking 2 bolt (compatible) shoes around, haven't they?

I would have said spiuk looking at the green one but do they make shoes? Vittoria and DMT and Sidi and Gaerne are the major shoe makers with DMT having (or had) Shimano and Nike contracts. Giro don't make shoes they are made by someone else. Mavic are another firm who subcontract - they used to be Adidas back in the T-Mobile day.
In fact doing A/B comparison with the link provided above I would say Spiuk looking how the sole tapers in to the heel and the way the vents are placed

  • They do look a lot like Spuiks, which is nice, because I know their 44 will fit me bob-on. Inner tart might still want the green ZS16RC, though.

    But Planet X bought Carnac.

Question. The 2 bolt cleat must stick out the bottom the full depth of the cleat, making walking as ungainly as spd-sl, unlike my shinamo RT32s which are recessed so walking is more or less fine. Thinking about a pair of those if I am wrong about the walking.

No, you're not wrong about the walking. My son has 2 bolt SPD cleats on his Spiuk shoes and they are not recessed in any way. He sounds like a horse when walking round to the garage to get his bike.

My shoes are some old Nike touring style with recessed cleats which are a doddle to walk in.
  • Yeah, they won't be as good as the RT32. Should be slightly less clunky than SL.

Lets hope the quality is better than the usual junk PX dishes out from China.

    Like?

PX gloves, bib shorts, jackets... All I received have been set back as faulty. Cheaply made and sold.

Weird. I've been wearing a PX jacket to work most days since Autumn, turbo 5 times a week in my PX shorts usually - I did find the gloves a bit small - but thats my fault rather than theirs.

In comparison I had to send back about 3 pairs of Castelli shorts that were 5 or 6 times the price of the PX ones ?

If your that confident in their wear I might give them another go.
  • I've had Planet X bibs in the past and thought they were good for the money, they do lots of good stuff. Saddles, calipers, their bar and stems have also always been good. Some of their casual clothes aren't bad either.

I'm still trying to see what happened to the news about Carnac...?

They're out of business or not? French bike shops still seem to stock them...

  • Re Carnac. Looking at the Internet Archive and other sources, as far as I can make out the original company seems to have ceased trading by 2008. At this point they were no longer French owned and probably were not manufacturing in France either, as sometime between 2004 and 2008 the old owner of the company retired and sold the name to an Italian company. The name was resurrected in 2011 by an importer / marketing and design company who sold Carnac branded shoes that were made in the Far East. This concern also seems to have gone to the wall with shops selling off old stock and PX buying up the remainder of the importer's stocks.

  • Px new frame appears to have carnac branding

Maybe me being a bit of a dick but I wouldn't want £160 shoes that have PlanetX plastered on the side when you can get Bont etc. It's the same as the expensive Boardman bikes. They look nice and brilliant spec etc but at the £4,000 mark I'd be a bit sad about having a Boardman...
