Slightly OT, but how do people rate the Eurosport Player? Do they broadcast in HD?

I'm thinking of cutting right back on Sky, but will miss ES if I do..

Think i've read in the past that Eurosport player isn't all that (unless it's improved since so maybe someone else can clarify).
Have thought the same about Sky, but i would miss Eurosport. Shame you can't just pay for one channel at a time.
Heard rumours that Sky might be showing more cycle races this year, but just a rumour. Always thought its a bit weird sponsoring and having your own team then not even showing them on TV, doesn't make sense to me at all. It's like having a corporate box at Wembley Stadium then never using it.

Tried it last year whilst I was on tour, didn't get on with it at all.

Sky have the rights to a fair amount but choose not to use them.

They have all the Flanders Classics stable of races and show the highlights. I *think* they showed Tour of Flanders live in 2014, but there were highlights of the other five.

They have both Swiss WT races, though in 2014 TdS ended up on Eurosport for the most part. They only wanted Romandie for Froome but at least showed it live.

They have highlights of all the Italian RCS races, though Eurosport show these live.

They showed Amstel Gold and Paris-Roubaix live I think too?

There may be others I'm forgetting.

I wish Eurosport had the Flanders Classics races. Cycling.tv had most of them but seem to have stopped showing some of them live in UK now.

Gent-Wevelgem might be boring but it's a shame Sky have the rights for it but only show 30 mins of edited highlights hours after the result is known.

The opposite is true, it's not weird at all! Why plaster your logo all over your own channels to viewers who already subscribe to your services? Much more effective if you advertise yourself all over every rival broadcaster possible, so buying rights to too many races would vastly reduce their exposure to potential new customers/markets.

I watch all the cycling on my ipad. Very good feed. Good value. I ditched Sky completely.
  • Also, forgot Sky carry Tour Down Under live for all the nocturnals out there.

Every rival broadcaster in this country being Eurosport? which is part of the Sky Sports package...

You can receive Eurosport on numerous other packages. Also, the grand tours and selected other races are covered by ITV. I really don't see much benefit to Sky buying the rights to races when it means only existing customers would see their brand plastered over the TV.
  • The rights don't cost a huge amount however. On the Cycling Podcast a few weeks ago, Ned Boulting said that ITV got the Tour of Britain for practically nothing (literally nothing at first but he thought they now paid some sort of token amount) while apparently the promoter of the two Canadian races receives $80,000 (Canadian) for TV rights while spending well over a million filming the races (I think those were the figures).

Virgin carry ES. You don't necessarily need Sky. If I can dig up a bill I can tell you much the monthly is.

  • Eurosport is on the news package on Sky, so you don't have to pay for Sports

We've talked about this a lot in the past but there is a bigger picture at work

    http://www3.ebu.ch/contents/news/2013/0 ... tners.html

For the biggest races, there is a requirement for them to be on free to air channels. Awkward for Sky, not impossible and of course things could change. But ultimately the sport is moving adverts, so if you're going to invest in it as a sponsor you want to see your brand in front of as many people as possible.

If Sky had loads of cycle races on one of their 47 sports channels then where would they put the replay of the 1982 Bosnian Grand Prix?

And that's where Velon come in. It's no co-incidence that managing director is an ex-Sky TV man.

That a race needs to be available free to air doesn't mean it cant also be on a pay channel. For most big races here in Denmark I have the choice of TV2 or Eurosport.

The argument that Sky don't need to broadcast because their customers have already bought their product is a little shaky, I imagine they spend a fair whack on customer retention already.

It's the same reason why Wiggo is still earning massive money at Sky even though he races very little. He has the ability to get coverage on all channels, he gets in the papers, he goes on chat shows, he gets on the news...
  • Slightly OT.
Here is a calender from inring which can be downloaded. I used it last year and found it to be very useful.

  • As ever, Sky Sports are showing the Aussie stuff this week, 1.30am on Tuesday morning for stage one of TDU and they have the crit at 12.30am as a warm-up.

  • Any news on the Tour of Qatar. It's my favourite race of the early season (I prefer it to Hey Volk really) and don't see it on any of the schedules?

Tour of Oman is usually a better race

Mmmm, could be tough for tv at least.
Bein Sports seem to have it in a lockdown atm.
