Stereotypes - a ramble

The internet is a wonderful place, so after a conversation I had earlier today (well the lecture I got) I thought I'd throw it out for the sense and sensibility of the BB.
After being lectured about throwing away another perfectly good relationship, I was sternly told that I manage to make people think I am one thing as I dress in tailored suits etc and not just for work, so people go oh look Sa0u823e is X then they talk to me and find out actually I wear lycra, ski, climb, read book after book and are suddenly shocked and feel misled.
Do others find that too many people are shocked by their hobbies, passions lifestyles when it isn't shown by how they dress?
I long ago (too late if I am honest) stopped writing people off or created preconceptions before I had spoken to them and I thought this was something most people did after a certain age.
Don't get me wrong I question some peoples dress sense or their table manners but I try, and sometimes consciously to make sure I don't write their story before they tell me.
Random ramblings of a guy who shaves his legs. Don't expect much sense

Step 2 is wrong and your main misconception. If anything, stereotypes are generally built to outrageous levels with old age.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

I get people stereotyping me based on my line of work - I guess downhilling accountants are not ten a penny, but then again I'm not a typical accountant (hopefully)"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
I don't even wear a suit when I'm at work let alone when I'm not"Arran, you are like the Tony Benn of smut. You have never diluted your depravity and always stand by your beliefs. You have my respect sir and your wife my pity"

Quite right too. Why wear a suit if you don't have to. I've worked in an office environment for 20 years and wear a suit only when I absolutely can't get away with not wearing one. Perhaps the most uncomfortable, pointless clothing ever invented. Whatever happened to individuality when people are forced to conform.0 -

Downhill accounting is better than uphill gardening, IMHO. I accept that my view is not universal.0 -

Sadly it is
I often talk about if its possible to drop out of society but I reckon you'd be hard pushe'd to these days."Arran, you are like the Tony Benn of smut. You have never diluted your depravity and always stand by your beliefs. You have my respect sir and your wife my pity"

To the above I like wearing suits, for ages after school I hated ties, recently started wearing them again. I rarely need a suit at work (would always have one hanging up in case) but they look good they work for any occasion, easy to dress up or down.
Yeah but London is a place where u can wear whatever and only occasionally does anyone raise an eyebrow. Paris no one blinks when I wear a suit.
Going uphill is hard work, some of us like to earn our downhills....0 -

Suits in your day to day life? So you're sitting around at home or with mates in a suit? Is your comfie clothes a suit too? I have one old stuff that probably is very dated and unlikely to fit, I was a bit bigger back then. I'll never need a suit with work. I'm unlikely to go to any family or friend event needing a suit. Hey I don't even want to be buried in one neither. Shove me 6 feet under in whatever I was wearing when I died, like I'll care.
Seriously I I can not imagine wanting to wear a suit except under duress.
Can I stereotype you? Are you a southerner?0 -
In my line of work, the number of times some placement personnel from all sorts of gomement quango's turn up and my first thought is wtf? hairy, bearded, messy, vacant. spaced out, in another world, messy - filthy even. Then you get talking to them and you realise that they are only human. The best volunteers I had were a recovering alcoholic/criminal and an ex drug dealer who had done a stretch of 9 years. If you had read their 'palmares' before accepting the placement, you would never have taken them on. Despite all this and the people who have come through my door, I never felt/was threatened and I have and they have always kept in touch.
So I never judge a book by it's cover. Pity I couldn't say that about a lot of people I meet !seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Nothing, but isn't it about dressing appropriately for any given situation?
What is appropriate is decided by society as a whole, this being an example of stereotyping at its 'best'
(Last time I wore a suit was When I had to go to the Palace, Buckingham, not Chrystal)my isetta is a 300cc bike0 -

If only indeed
The Good Life isn't dropping out in my opinion, I'm talking a narrow boat and just moving about as and when you fancy it 8)"Arran, you are like the Tony Benn of smut. You have never diluted your depravity and always stand by your beliefs. You have my respect sir and your wife my pity"

What about interviews? Weddings? Funerals?
Don't you like to look smart, just occasionally?0 -
I'd love to have a few made to measure suits. I wouldn't wear one all the time but nice tailoring always looks good.0

I don't mind wearing a suit every now and again, but I'm glad I don't have to wear one all the time. Luckily at work we only ever wear a suit if we have visitors from the Far East, otherwise we wear what we want.
As for going out, I'd rather go to place where I can wear jeans and a t-shirt. I might get a few strange looks wearing a suit in the pubs/clubs that I go to.
As this is BB, someone must wear a suit at work, then when they get home put on their Gimp suit?0 -
