Passive smoking and turbo training - should I be concerned?

my man cave is my garage. It's a 'semi detached' garage, and the people next door use it as their smoking room. When they are all in there you can smell it, not enormously strong but definitely noticeable.

Dangerous or not? Googling has made me more confused.

You'll definitely have the black lung

I am assuming they tend to smoke around the same time? Can you try and work out their "schedule" and then adjust your turbo times accordingly.

I doubt its much worse than cycling in central London for example!

Nothing to worry about - when you think about the amount of passive smoke anyone that drank in pubs until the last few years must have inhaled and I don't think that it's been proven to be a significant problem for the huge majority what you are being exposed to is a tiny tiny fraction of that.

  • If you can smell it, it's definitely going to kill you...

Oh, hang on, that's hydrogen cyanide...

Smoke from cigarettes is bad for you no matter what the scenario. The last thing I'd want to do is tack huge breaths when I'm doing sport and you could draw in a lot of smock.

I'd look to get in there when they are not spoking and stink out the place with a tough turbo season. They'd have to be desperate to enter the place when it sticks of sweat.

I'd also look to have to fans on to cool me down and the other pointed at them to prevent their spoke coming towards you.

Sorry don't really get the layout here? Is this a garage shared by both properties or is there basically no wall between the two properties and the smoke drifts? A fan will probably keep it away. If its a private garage for a bunch of houses - you could argue that its a public place and therefore subject to the ban? http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/200 ... 028_en.pdf

But if its just the smell of smoke from their smoking den - I doubt its doing you to much harm. You could try insulating your man cave with http://www.wickes.co.uk/Celotex-25mm-Hi ... m/p/190545 or even a damp proof http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-1000-Gau ... m/p/152858
  • As already said, if it's just the smell then it probably won't cause much harm, but if it is the second hand smoke itself then obviously doing a turbo session in it isn't a great idea.

The first turbo session I did back in the garden of my student house my neighbors (not students themselves) decided to have a couple of joints about a third of the way into my session. Despite the high fence paneling it still stank and I couldn't be sure if my light headedness was from the intervals or the fumes...

Would not recommend to a friend...

    Hi,

It's basically 2 garages attached sharing one 'party' wall. Think of a double garage with a brick wall down the middle.

I think I might insulate it. For the moment I'm pretty satisfied its not going to kill me.

I realise it's a bit galling that you are having to adjust your behaviour due to the actions of others but sometimes needs must. What about purchasing a portable fume extractor or installing an air extractor if there's a garage window or door which can be utilised? A pain in the ass and an unwanted expense I agree but it does give peace of mind and avoids any unnecessary confrontation with the neighbour who will consider they have as much right to unrestricted use of the garage as you have.

How about asking them to close their garage door when you're using your turbo? Tell them it doesn't bother you any other time but when on tne turbo it is an issue.

I've told the neighbours when smoke was coming in an open window from them smoking at their front door, they just apologised and it's rarely an issue now.

I've no idea how it drifts in - I don't think it's through an open door.

I've decided to try and persuade them to give up - new year and all.
