I'm pretty new to road cycling and bloody love it! I've commuted for years on a decent MTB and used a cheap pair of shimanos that cost about £50 and they were fine so last august when I got my first road bike I bought a similar pair of shimano road shoes, however I truly have the roadie bug and shelled out on some more expensive kit now I have invested in a better quality road bike (Cube GTC Agree race) I bought my first pair of Sidi's in the sales, cost about £130 and my god you can tell the difference, they are so stiff yet sooo comfy, they've transformed my ride, definately seems to be you get what you pay for! Not sure I could justify paying much more though, not until I have a LOOK 795 Aerolight :D

I paid £40 for a pair of Diadora ProRacer 2's (carbon sole) from CRC about 18 months ago, I was looking at them and they were around the £100 mark and i was opening other websites and comparing prices and I went back to CRC ten minutes later to buy them and they had been reduced and my size was available. £100 was the absolute max i was prepared to spend, thankfully I didnt have to.

My current favourites are a pair of Scotts which cost me £33 including the postage for a pair I returned after buying two different sizes. ("RRP" was £100 or so.) I also have a pair of Bonts, not sure which model, that are very comfortable but maybe half a size too big on reflection and a strange shape, rather triangular. Those were about £90 from my LBS, which happened to be listed as a stockist when I looked online to find out where I could try a pair. Before that - and still used in winter - were Specialized somethings, really good except the non-replaceable heel cushion turned to dust.

Never having worn more expensive shoes to feel the benefit (real or imagined), I doubt I'd ever see fit to spend over £100 on shoes. Same as I've never gone into Assos/Rapha territory on kit or over £2k for a bike.
  • I have the previous model (I think) of these. May not be a fashionable brand but carbon sole and good value
