That was a bit of a slog towards the end but done now - a nice round 30 score. Thanks Durrin for your endless patience with me!
    Faster than a tent.......
  • Well, that is the year with a total of 53 points. I'm happy to have made more than 50 points, but I don't think I'll do as many next year. I don't think this has been the best for my training.
Anyway, thanks Durrin for keeping the totals throughout the year.

Well after being upset I went out in March I would have gone out again in October - ended up being in Norway most of the month.

Even if I had stayed in I would only be on 24 (26 as I would have had to do at least 1x100km in both March and October), so that's a lot less than some of you lot!! Congratulations to everyone who completed it, particularly DeadCalm, W12 lad and runner2cycling - incredible stuff.
  • That's it. Done. First time in a few years that I have got through the first couple of months. Just about scraped in this month. I amassed 32 points which, when compared to DeadCalm's and others, is pretty pathetic, but it pleases me. Thanks to Durrin for running the challenge.

Well that's me done. It was a slightly anti-climactic end to what has been an incredible year.

I started the year 85kg (officially obese at my modest height) and my early miles were simply an effort to lose weight and without this challenge in mind. However, once I looked back at the start I had made it was difficult not to try and keep going. That was a major factor in me succeeding in my ultimate goal of losing weight. I'm now a 'normal' (just) 69kg, the lightest I have been in 30 years so thanks to everyone who took part and you Durrin, in particular, for the admin.

Big respect to those who have completed the challenge in cooler climates and whilst holding down a day job. I've been lucky enough not to have been working this year and to have had some of the best cycling in the world on my doorstep.

It wasn't all plain sailing though. Terrible air pollution during the burning season, temperatures in the mid 40s, monsoon rains that turn the roads into rivers in minutes. Then there was my trip to Europe that took up the whole of May and but for a couple of rides on my mum's bike in the freezing cold would have knocked me out of the challenge altogether.

This was a once in a lifetime year for me. The savings are running out so I'll need to find a job pretty soon. I expect in future years to be nearer the bottom of the table than the top. The challenge will be to keep the weight off despite that.

Anyway, best wishes and a happy new year to all.

  • That's me finished in true Lantern Rouge style, sneaked one in at the last minute. Mind you it was a bit naughty out there today - weather-wise.
You've no won the Big Cup since 1902!
  • I'm done :D
    Managed a sneaky one today.

I'd like to echo the comments thanking Durrin for organising this and doing the admin.

Well done to everyone who completed. @Deadcalm interesting post. In my mind you were some sort of pro/elite amateur doing those sort of miles, v impressed.

23 of us completed the challenge, 0 dropped out in december. That makes this the biggest year since I started as admin. Total MCC points among the 23 finishers was 1209, significantly more than the previous years(1047, 577, 706 for '14, '13, '12), obviously partly due to the podium finishers Dead Calm, W12 Lad, and Runner2Cycling, and their amazing totals. 90 was enough to win the challenge in 2013, but only enough for a distant 4th this year!!

Congratulations to all the finishers, keep up the good work.

I'm not really sure if I want to keep running the challenge for 2016: it seems to me in the days of Strava and Endomondo it might be just a tad redundant. Thoughts?

Durrin thanks for all hard work and re 2016 continuing whilst it`s a fun challenge with an established bunch of riders you`re right about Strava / Endomondo; we can each join our own groups etc for comparisons (eg I`m signed up to YACF)---so probably yes if you`re unsure about continuing it I`d go with that OK

    Durrin

You are right about Strava etc, and if you don't feel like running it any more then I think you have to make the decision which is best for you.

    However...

I use Strava, but the only group I am a member of is my cycling club. They have a weekly leader board consisting of km ridden, climbing, and longest ride. This resets every week and is briefly interesting. So from my point of view the MCC is far from redundant, and I do enjoy it.

Whatever you decide, thanks for what you have done to date. The forum will be a poorer place without MCC :(

    Durrin,

Have really enjoyed this challenge over the last couple of years, and find the competition against people I have never met, and unlikely to meet strangely motivational.

As others have said fully respect your decision if you choose not to run this in 2016, but I would certainly miss it.

Thanks again for all your efforts I organising in the past.
  • Although many people are on Strava, some aren't... it is a nice initiative, which should go ahead... Strava or not
I was actually thinking of entering it

MCC has motivated me since the start of the decade and I think I've only missed one month in that time... others have given time and effort to administer it in the past so my turn to give a little back.

Durrin, please could you copy & pm me the intro / rules / guidance from the start of the 2015 thread and I will start the 2016 one off.

    Cheers :)

A big thank you to Durrin for their hard work and now Pollys Bott for continuing to support the challenge.

I too feel that MCC fills a different role from Strava. I greatly appreciate all that you've done administering it Durrin and am pleased to see that Pollys Bott is willing to take it on.

Thanks both - I'll be signing up for 2016 and once again will not be fighting for the podium ;-)
If you still don't know what recursion is, read this sentence.
  • I did my December ride - the most miserable 100 km in a head wind after dark on the 26th. Did it not post? Was just under the wire as had been away for work for a month & fearful would not happen.

Oh - I wrote 26 Nov! Will fix that now (and since I initially only had one ride listed in Nov that clearly was an error!).

I am not on strava - am a pen & paper Luddite & I love this challenge so would hope for it to continue. I like seeing the same folks & reading about their rides ... I was on a bike trip recently and everyone would upload files to strava first thing to see if they "won" segments - which is the antithesis of the mcc here. I think dead calm exemplifies the mcc ethos perfectly.

Thank you Durrin for the work you've done, been a great year, sometimes very hard on the last day of the month!

I agree re Strava and the like although it was a fun challenge for me.

I'm another who thinks the MCC definitely has a place. I find it hugely motivational. Yes, I'm on Strava but there is no way Strava would have had me riding in a hailstorm on my mum's bike, taking a detour around town in a monsoon to get that last 10 kilometers in or any of the other slightly mad things I did to maximise my monthly points.

Many thanks Durrin for all your work over the previous years and to you Polly's Bott for picking up the baton.

Good to see support for the continuation of the MCC, the 2016 thread is now running so get signed up. You'll have to bear with this unashamedly technophobic Luddite, but what is that spreadsheet that Durrin kept the scores on last year? Is it a Google document, if so then what do I have to do to get my mitts on one?

    Cheers...

I will definetly add my name to the group taking part if the will is there to keep it going.

These things demand a lot of the few who step up and do the admin so kudos if Pollys Bott is able to fulfil the role. This may seem low tech but it appeals far more than chasing segments, just ride your bike in your own time at your own speed over a set distance. Seems a great recipe to motivate a longer ride than may have otherwise been on the cards and runs off that old forgotten concept of trust

I have found the challenge very motivational over the last 2 years so thanks for organising it.

I won't be joining in this year as it doesn't fit in with my predicted training patterns. My competitive nature just wouldn't let me do any 45-50 mile rides last year as I saw those as being a waste of a point! This year I intend to do far more short fast rides and not feel guilty.

Good luck to everyone who is taking part in 2016.
