wine - three bottles for the price of one!

(4.29 for three bottles)

I know wine is cheap here but is this not encouraging people to buy more than they need, no wait it's wine :D

what are you actually getting though for 4.29 :(

when you have to look at an average of 32p for the bottle, 26p for the transportation and then the duty and tax, whats left for the actual drink.
You can't buy vinegar for that !

My brother in law has some sort of formula for buying booze that is price and strength dependant. I'm not sure how it works but whenever I'm offered a drink I'm told how strong it is and how cheap it is. This is clearly not a good thing, I've never had good beer or wine at his place.

    Yep!

@vtech, have you not heard of loss leaders? Also wine is an important industry here and is not heavily taxed as it is considered a necessity not a luxury item for VAT purposes.

Update: I have now sampled some of this wine, it it fairly typical of a wine from the Alentejo, good grapes, everyday drinking wine if you see what I mean. Not as good as a 4.29 'quality' wine :D

    No, because it's virtually undrinkable.

I know a little about loss leaders but the loss would need to be minor which would still leave very little money for the wine itself.

On a £4.99 bottLe of wine in UK £2.93 is duty, the wine value is 16p, there is no duty on wine in Portugal so the same price wine here would have a wine value of £3.09 they have a much larger margin to play with when trying to entice you into trying their wine :D

Most likely but i'll still sit on the popcorn in eager anticipation.

I suppose he could introduce the idea to the Portuguese of adding duty to their wine and volunteer to run their economy...

But... you mentioned 3 bottles for 4.29, it may be a loss leader but that just means they make zero profit at best, it goes against the grain to actually lose money for them.

    I wasn't referring to you. :D

What's up Vtech? Can't you get over the idea that Portugal has a low wage/low cost economy so whilst they may be 'poor' in comparison to us, they aren't running around like headless chickens and might actually be enjoying life*?

*This may involve drinking copious quantities of cheap Vino because they produce copious quantities of the stuff and unlike the French, don't restrict volumes for their equivalent respective classifications.

Only owned it for the past 7 months, we have harvested this last september so no bottling yet and no plans for the UK as I went into this as a small personal project since retirement. I have no plans as yet and will make future desisions in the summer of 15.

My example was to demonstrate the difference caused by duty, this breakdown was based on RETAIL price the supermarket don't pay this price, if I had to guess I would say the WHOLESALE price is probably 60cents a bottle and the supermarket and then producer are able to make a profit by selling it at 1.43 RETAIL a bottle, so don't worry about their ability to make money :D

Time to come clean, I was actually jesting.
Although I realise wine is a business where the end user doesn't get anywhere near the product he/she is buying I also realise that it can be churned out for next to nothing.

Also learnt a lot this year about the most costly brands where the same happens but the inflated pricing goes on fancy advertising with the end result still being a poor quality product.

Seriously though, I really like the wines of the Douro region, are you in the Douro Superior, the Cima Corgo or the baixo Corga? What grape variety?

What were previous years wine called maybe I have tried it?

    Cool personal project.

Seriously disappointed, there was I believing that what someone says on a forum was real and not all made up!

So you are a middle aged housewife who doesn't own a bike but likes to hang out on fora drives a ford escort and lives on your own in a flat in Sutton coalfield, Owns a boxer (dog that is) and is desperately trying to hook yourself a young 45 year old bald mamil :D

Ohh, I was jesting about understanding the value of wine and how cheaply it can be made. I wasn't jesting about owning a vineyard. It is nothing special and the reason I bought it was because it had failed the previous owner and for some reason I believe I can turn it around.

I wouldn't put the name up on a forum for obvious reasons but if your local to the area I am over at the end of Jan and would happily give you a tour of the setup. Free food and wine and you can stay onsite for a couple of days with the wife if you like.

  • What 'obvious' reason do you have for concealing your involvement in wine production?

Last I heard you were arranging to meet forum members and enticing them to jump into a strangers car with you ... I hardly think mixing some ribena and anti-freeze is going to get you into much more trouble. ;)

I could answer that in 2 ways in all honesty. :)

    1) your wife, I presume she likes to go away with you from time to time.
    2) my wife, I don't offer her that much theses days, 5'9", overweight, bald.
