Turbo Training Videos

I have been using a turbo trainer for 6 sessions now, and currently just listen to music, which keeps me motivated.
I have a Garmin Edge 500 setup with a couple of interval workouts that I switch between, using a HRM to keep in specific zones for the intervals. I got the workouts from an eBook: Cycling Turbo Training for Beginners by Rebecca Ramsay.
I have a Tacx iPad mount coming as an Xmas pressie, so am planning to start watching some videos instead of listening to music.
I have seen a couple of different trainer videos on YouTube (both BikeRadar ones, and also GCN), but as I have the turbo setup in the garage, I don't get a strong enough WiFi signal to stream them to my iPad out there.
Are there any good downloadable videos that can be bought that would come with some form of training program I can setup on my Garmin? I have seen the Sufferfest videos, and these seem to fit the bill, but are there any better alternatives?

I'm sure in the case of the YouTube videos you mention: GCN, CTCX 45 minute workout there wouldn't be an issue with downloading them to your pad for training use.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

Look at the Sufferfest videos, I team them up with trainer road. Not free but good workouts.0

Trainer Road does look interesting - especially as I am a bit of a techie fan...
So would I pair the Garmin Cadence and HR monitor with my iPad instead of the actual Edge 500, and then plan the intervals using Trainer Road?
Can you import trainer road info into garmin connect?
It's a shame I didn't think of all this before buying my turbo. I went for a Tacx Booster as it was a good deal and didn't think I would use the smart features of the others (especially as there is no power in the garage).0 -
Your iPad needs to have ANT+ support via a dongle in order for the TR app to recognise and pair with your ANT+ sensors. Your Garmin can still pair with them at same time as there is no conflict.
Just check if TR is been updated for iPad IOS, thought it was still just iPhone compatible at the moment... you need to do some digging.
You can download your workout data from TrainerRoad as a .tcx file anytime and upload to wherever you like TrainingPeaks... Strava ..... I speak as a Windows laptop user.0 -
Yeah iPad is listed, so looks ok - i just need the lightning adaptor (about £20) and then the iPad ANT+ adaptor (about £40). I guess any ANT+ will work?
Plus my Booster is listed as compatible with the Virtual Power calculator too.
I will plod on for a bit longer doing my basic intervals, and in the new year start a subscription!
Thanks for the recommendations0 -

Nice1. Thank you. Actually my ipad3 and iphone4s both have the old style connector so I only require the ANT+ connector.
Cheers for that.0 -
There are no real copyright issues with downloading videos, providing you are not breaching a specific license agreement that you have agreed to, distributing them or profiting from other people's IP illegally . There is so much confusion about the legal aspects of downloading videos.
It might be easier to put a powerline adapter in the garage or a wifi range extender. Youtube is full of great vids. The subscription/purchase based model is really not going to survive against content with ads approach unless it can game-itize the platform.0 -
The garage is at the end of the garden, and we are in a 2nd floor flat - so the range is just too far to comfortably stream video. That's even with a WiFi extender as near to the garage as possible.
I might watch a few TV shows on Sky Go to get me started - I have The Wire to catch up on...0 -
I have an iPad Air2 or a 4yr old high spec Dell laptop (still good).
Which would you guys use to run TR and Sufferfest?Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

I just use the laptop for Trainerroad - just needs the Suunto USB ANT+ stick. Dunno if its cheaper for that or the ipad.
I then use my Ipad for iplayer - but I'm sure it'd work fine the other way round too.0 -

I use TR on 4yr old pretty cr@p laptop and works fine with suunto ant+ stick and ‘fest videos. Not got the equipment to rig up my ipad but assume it’s more of a faff than with laptop.Canyon AL Ultimate 9.00 -
Thanks guys. I have ordered and an ANT+ USB for the laptop.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Ah just read the tech info on their site and the Garmin Ant+ adaptor doesn't work, you need the Wahoo one which is £50. Have ordered both parts and will now sign up, no point waiting until the new year!0

Scrap that, cancelled the iPad kit order, and got the USB laptop version instead. Works out a lot cheaper for the parts and I have a spare laptop I don't mind using in the garage where it might get a bit bashed. Just need to fix up some form of stand to put it on in front of the bike...0

you can normally get an extra 30-50% by using some DIY mods to the antenna:

I get a little extra range from the wifi when I wear my tin-foil hat, but I tend to sweat a little more...0
