Fugly as hell and it pains me to say it but I think I prefer the ugly ultegra one over this. Sack the designer!

Am I the only person who quite likes the look of ultegra?

It's done the opposite of grown on me. Didn't like it at first, now think it's positively grim :(

A great strap-line for these new chainrings would be:

"Yeah we know it's pig ugly, but hey it's even stiffer than the previous one"

The fact that the old one was at least as stiff as it needed to be is lost on the technical depts who strive to achieve improvements, necessary or not, at the expense of style. This new SR is a classic case of that.

I think the 'stiffness' it's supposed to fix, is the flex in the chainrings when changing under load - which supposely messes the process up. The recent Shimano chainsets are much better at that, especially when used with Di2.

The uneven spider arm gaps seem enough of a form over function thing for me to lose interest. If you must make something functionally worse for aesthetic reasons, at least make the aesthetics good!

Did you have a 50-34 crank on before, if so did you have to raise the front mech for the new crank. Also is it quite easy to swap, as i've just bought a record 52-36 my self, the BB is a BB386evo.
I think the new crank's make the old type look a bit dated.

Yes I had a 50/34 and had to raise the front mech up a tad, and yes its pretty straight forward to change.
Also like you said after looking at the old crank after having the new one it does look dated.

Surely it's function over form. More material is where the force is actually being applied.

Yeah the crank, and bare carbon is horrific. It being displayed on a Canyon doesn't help...

  • Agreed - the chainset is seriously fugly. Think the rear mech looks worse too.
