I can see a market for the old stuff, for many years to come.

  • Nice to see the UK still getting royally screwed on the pricing vs the USD price.
  • I don't think the majority of people do actually have a unique and developed taste... they are generally told what they have to like by adverts, which explains the spread of horrible oversized matt black bicycles and componentry that win races but are ugly as hell and are terribly impersonal for the price tag.
If SR is going to be pricey enough and well reviewed by the glossy magazines, people will not only buy it, but also like it

  • I agree. The old Ultegra/Dura ace wasnt the best looking, but the new versions look awful. The last generation campag stuff looked nice though. The new SR seems to be look similar to the shimano stuff.

  • Nothing is as fugly as Ultegra, but that comes close.

I have to say that I look like I have fallen for this trend with my 3 bikes (and the wife's which I bought) as they are all black frames. However I have always liked this look and my oldest frame, a Bianchi SL3, is black but easily pre-dates the current plain black look. In fact I thought it looked so good when I first saw one like it in a shop I can still remember exactly where and when. I like it despite the advertising, but equally I don't think I am ever going to be convinced my that 4 arm spider!!

  • £370 for a cassette.

Would anybody on here seriously pay that ? Serious question ?

I like the 4 arm spider (the looks) and it looks far better than any Shimano crankset.
What I don't like is incompatibility with anything before...
Luckily I have a SRAM S900 crankset so I can step in this fashion cheap.....with an MTB spider.

That was a good looking frame... my flat mate at the time had one

You don't buy an SR cassette, your sponsor or your team buys it for you... ;)

  • I quite like the looks of modern Ultegra/ 105/ Dura Ace, more than the older 5 arm varients.
Not quite as pretty as DA 7700 when it's been polished up, but still looks pretty mean.

That new Campag crank however. I've never really been a fan of those UD carbon cranks and making it appear thinner doesn't do it for me. But then Campag has never really appealed to me, and probably never will.
  • I don't really care what drive train components look like tbh as long as they're quiet, efficient, durable and lightweight enough.

Having said that, I think the new CampagNoNo stuff looks great- esp the chainset! Yes, of course I'm a Shimano type....

It's only the crank that's fugly...I run my record set-up with a Rotor 3d+ chainset with praxis works chain rings. But tbh unless my record breaks I'm not going to change it...it's pretty much perfect.

Thanks Paulo, here it is in an old format (plenty is different now) with a nice polished 5 arm Chorus square taper chainset, from when Campag chainsets were still nice to look at. You will be horrified to learn that I sold this after fitting a black Veloce Ultra-Torque one

  • I like the look of it.
  • PS. It works especially well with those Ultegra pedals.

It looks like it could just be on an Argos bike.

That's the cheaper model of it though - without the chain guard.
  • Nice to see the UK still getting royally screwed on the pricing vs the USD price.

Not really: Complete groupset: US $3,485 vs. UK £2,945.

Take the VAT off the UK price, since the US price will be ex-sales tax, and the UK price is £2,454. At today's exchange rate of $1.55, that's $3,803 or a 9% premium. It's more, but hardly "royally screwed".

And in the US, there's the distributor network (keeping sales at the RRP) to deal with - here, the direct online discounts from the big sites keeps prices well below list.

Only if Ultegra pedals have KEO printed on the sides!

It can be ugly or acceptable looking depending on which way the light is hitting it.

It is never going to be nice. Even a silhouette of it is not nice. :P

If money were no object though, I wouldn't hesitate to get this specific chainset.

I think it depends on the bike you fit it to. On that Colnago I think it looks wrong, beautiful frameset but clashes with the more industrial functional looks of the chainset. That said I'd still ride a Colnago with that groupset if you gave it me!

I agree with this. On something like a Passoni it would look the dog's.

The illusion of the chainrings/arms being off-centre and the fat-as-Fern-Britton crank arms can't be overcome by anything as subtle as a playing with the dimmer switch...
