I saw a bit of this last night and it was cringe-worthy.
There was an episode of Curry and Chips (1969) that was unbelievable you just can't imagine it was acceptable to show...
The scenes for the Black and White Minstrels... jeezsee

No different to looking back at medeival or Victorian times ... It reflected life in Britain at that period and should not be viewed as a period of shame but part of British history. Bear in mind that we used to kill the majority of foreigners who came to our shores so calling them a few names was progress of some sort. We've just moved on again.Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.0

Makes you wonder what is acceptable today that will be deemed outrageous in 40 years time.
Driving cars? Smoking? Alcohol? Drugs in general? Gangsta Rap?
........The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

I can't find a link to the Curry and Chips gem.
Another one was Derek Griffiths and a bus with a woman singing chink-ee chink-ee something or other while pulling their eyes to make themselves look Chinese.
This is not it but was the best I could find;

Smoking, of course, is already unacceptable.Vote for a left of centre party if you want to find out sooner.
What, the SNP? Certainly none of the parties that have English MPs...0 -

My wife is 100% against. My sons are 100% for.
I am, meh.
And are we talking purely tobacco, or all smoking? The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

So we are predicting that smoking will be looked on as ridiculous in the future.
I don't doubt you are correct, so what else?
I say future as no matter how offensive it is to some right now, there is a sizeable percentage that are happy to continue today. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Legs & Co. One 70's throwback I'm not adverse to.“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring”

The 70's Bush would put me off. :shock:0 -
Yet weirdly reminiscent of Girls Aloud, so not really that much 'progress' after all ...Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.0

Pan's People made many a young lad very happy, back in the day. It was indeed alright in the 70s, sometimes.0 -

I remember, as a child of the 70's, the first family to get a car in our street got an Austin Allegro. It became something of a communal vehicle with different households borrowing the car at weekends. I recall the excitement felt on the occasions my dad would come home and say "we've got Brian's car for the day on Sunday!" This invariably resulted in a drive to a country pub, and me spending several hours sat on my own in said Austin Allegro being topped up with coke and crisps while my mum and dad got p1ssed in the pub.

I seem to recall most people who had a telly rented it from DER or Radio Rentals.
I distinctly remember one of the neighbours trying to flog a device that you plugged into the aerial socket on black and white TVs that was supposed turn it into colour telly! Thankfully my technically inept late father didn't fall for that one.

As a child I went to Torquay in the 1970s and saw the Black and White Minstrels live. We sat in the front row and for the whole show one of the blacked up guys stared straight at me whilst sings. I found it to be quiet scary.
As others have said difficult to judge the 1970s from today's prespective. In the future people might be looking back and saying 'That Nelson Mandela was disgusting, he ate meat'.0 -

As for the curry and chips episode it has to be the singularly most unfunny and offensive piece of TV comedy/sit-com ever broadcast. Even allowing for the passage of time it is just so offensive.Tail end Charlie

Curry and Chips was written by Johnny Speight so in principle I suspect that it was actually attacking discrimination even if that is not really apparent now or tehn for that matter (given it only lasted 6 episodes)!0
