    GT looks great - Planet X London Road looks like good value. I like the Whyte bikes myslef though - I'd get a Whyte Dorset. All this assumes you want discs.

    I wouldn't put any stock in magazine reviews, too many agendas, too many marketing budgets to worry about.

    Canyon also do a cyclocross bike with disk brakes called the Inflite which would be a great winter bike if that was the sort of thing you're after. They even sell two builds. One set up for cyclocross and one that comes equipped with road tyres and mudguards for exactly your purpose. The 105 model is a little over your budget at £1199. This or the Rose would both tempt me if I was in the market.

  • Is it better to go for s shorter top tube and frame size or larger top tube and frame size if you fall in between sizes.

    Don't discount the Rose CX option, you can configure it so changing it to have a compact groupset and road tyres is all possible and most (not all) of the options are £0 extra.     Yeah, I think they'd both do the job well. I do like the Rose website but I think I prefer the Canyon bikes. It would be worth checking the brake spec. I'm not sure if they're both cable, both hydraulic or one of each. I think the Canyon is hydraulic which would be a plus.
  • Well I have narrowed it down to grade 105 alloy, canyon inflite Al 8.0 and rose DX hydraulic. I will now have to compare specs with value for money . Not sure about best group sets bit out of touch time to catch up

    I got the rose dx3000 (ultegra 36/52 chainset plus hydraulic discs) and had my first proper rides today...freaking great bike so far. I'll be posting a review thread there in a day or two, the brakes were as good in the wet (on way home from work) as they were in the dry too. Bike is very lightweight for what it is and gears silky smooth. Rose will let you configure pretty much anything it seems, regardless of whether it's on their configurator or not. Couldn't configure anything on the canyon inc tyres and so I went with the rose as the canyon would've been an extra £100+ once I put proper tyres on. Both would be great choices though, you can't go wrong with either I think

  • Merlin CX 2.0 105 for £999?

    Pearson Rough with the Smooth for a touch over £1k?

    I love the Pearson....but not paying what they're asking for SRAM Apex. The Merlin with 105 and Fulcrum disc wheel set is far better deal IMO.

    Merlin has perfectly marvellous mech disc brakes, plus lugs for full muddies if required...

    Canyon bikes generally come with pretty good tyres IMO. However if they're not to your liking it's nice and to have the Rose configurability

    Only had a quick browse through, but surely the obvious answer is your current summer bike becomes the winter bike, and you buy something nicer for next summer?
  • Hi Jack. I understand and like your thinking but my summer bike retails at close to 2k. My winter bike hopefully will be half that.
