Im trying to work out if I need a speed and cadence sensor for a Wahoo Kickr.

Im kind of guessing I dont need a speed sensor (no wheel) and this is a build in feature and I do need a cadence sensor on the crank arm.

Any help would be great.

You get speed from the kickr. If you want to know cadence you'll need a cadence sensor.
  • You won't regret getting a Kickr.

Like timdb stated the Kickr does output speed but you will need a cadence sensor if you want to record this. One thing to conside is what apps and device you will use to control the Kickr as to the type(s) of Cadence sensors you require.

I have both an ANT+ and also a seperate Bluetooth Cadence sensor. The best way to control the Kickr is via Bluetooth so you want to use a Bluetooth sensor so the control software can record the cadence and also an Ant+ so that your Garmin can record the data. I think the New Wahoo Blue SC speed\cadence sensor will output on both protocols.

I also have a dual bluetooth\Ant+ heart rate strap. The one I went for was the Viiiiva from 4iiii.com which I've had no problems with.

    Thanks for your replays.

    I went for the following:-
    KICKR Turbo Trainer
Blue SC Speed and Cadence Sensor
    TICKR Heart Rate Monitor
    RPM Cadence Sensor

Should all be with me by the end of the week, ordered direct from the US.

I think that should cover things. Im going to be running on a windows PC with a bluetooth USB dongle.

The next question would be which apps to use. Should be with

Can i ask why you ordered from the states as I'm 99% going to buy one.

Also on the sensor front, I'm planning to run the wahoo with trainer road. Can the program work with Bt and ant + at the same time?

As I'd use my edge 500 as a back up recorder. With the garmin cadence sensor and hr strap. With speed via bt4.0 and power bt4.0 and ant+ at the same time (prob only need to be ant+).

  • I think to get the most from the Kickr you need an iPad as you get more choice of apps. The Wahoo site has a list of supported program/apps and if they are PC or tablet based.

You are able to use a Garmin as a backup as ANT+ is able to be recorded by multiple devices at the same time but BTLE will only output to one device at a time.

Going to be running it with a Mac mini and a iPad if needed.

TrainerRoad and KICKR is the way to go. I am running iOS Beta on iPad Mini Retina which shows power readings. My Garmin Edge 500 shows HR & Cadence as I haven't got BT Sensors yet. The Beta App is not fully functional as yet but working fine. I may go back to my PC sitting on a table and working with Ant+ when the testing process is over as that was 100% OK. Speed on an indoor trainer is not really relevant.

"I want to mention something really important about speed & distance inside on a trainer. It just doesn’t matter. Meaning, because resistance is controlled by the trainer and/or your gearing, you can change gears and make the speed or distance increase/decrease without changing effort. In other words, if you give me a bike on a trainer, I can make it show 35MPH, or 15MPH – with the same effort – just by switching up the gears I’m using. So, don’t fret or obsess with speeds and distances on a trainer – they mean nothing. Focus on time and quality."

The main reason I ordered from the US was because I got a free speed/cadence sensor with it. The unit was more or less the same price as on wiggle and although I ordered from the US the unit was shipped from mainland Europe and came in 5 days.

Setting it up tonight, winter miles summer smiles....

I think I managed to work out what my problem was. I was trying to connect via Bluetooth. PC found my cadence and HRM, could see the Kickr but wouldn't connect to it.

Should receive an Ant+ dongle today which I believe will allow full connection.

Tempted by this but using a SS Paddy Wagon (a 2008 which I believe has 135mm rear triangle) and sticking it on ERG mode with TrainerRoad rather than using gears...

Anyone tried anything similar... or reckon it's either sensible or ridiculous?
