Go faster old lady

Firstly, please no laughing (or if so, perhaps quietly!)
I have probably been around for more years than most of you; I love my bike, but have no ambition to do serious biking. However, I would like to get a bit fitter, perhaps be able to go a bit faster and add some interest to my journeys. I do two journeys to work a week and sometimes go out at the weekends (about 40 miles a week in total).
Can someone point me in the direction of some SIMPLE training advice using heart rate zones that wont scare me rigid? I have read that staying in the lower zones for longer increases your long term fitness, but then it all gets very complicated.
Many thanks

No need to complicate things with HR - just increase your volume. 40 miles a week is not enough to bring about significant improvement.0

The bike is actually a great tool for getting a lot fitter over a longer timescale.
I reckon your main ambition is to ride the bike with a by product of increasing your healthy fitness.
My advice would be not to get enveloped by zones and thresholds and all the luggage that comes with it all.
Just ride your bike, develop your skills in riding.. may be test yourself when riding uphill by going a little harder.. ride safe and enjoy... your health will benefit.
I'd just say try to ride as much as possible though... 40 miles at a gentle pace is not going to massively change your fitness levels but it will have an effect on your wellbeing.0 -
I agree with the previous 2 posters - ride more, and enjoy it.0
