Climbing in Cheshire

Hi all, I'm staying with friends for a month in Altrincham, SW.Manchester. I don't know this area, but I've been getting out southwards to Cheshire, Knutsford, Northwich, Holmes Chapel etc, the roads are nice enough, quiet, fast and I'm enjoying a bit of change from my old haunts in North Wales. Well, except I've not done more than 1000m in the last week!

So... suggest me some climbs! Less than 1hr, 30km, from Altrincham would be ideal, I don't often have that much time to get across to the Peak District...

Cheers, Steve

  • Hi Steve, I have been riding nikes in Manchester for a few years now and there aren't really any hills in the SW Manchester area. Your best bet is as you have mentioned to head East towards the Peaks. There are a few small climbs in Alderly Edge (Wizard & Swiss) but your best bet is to head to Poynton and from there head for Brickworks or Blaze Hill, probably at the limit of your required distance but you can't move a mountain.

  • Brilliant, thanks for the advice Gareth, I'll give it a go over Poynton, I guess I'll just have to make more time!
  • Or you could head a little further north-west over to Crank Hill. Near Rainford.
  • thanks foggy, I'll add that to my list. It looks reachable from here in good time, although I'm keen to avoid the East Lancs road... I'm going to check out the hills past Poynton tomorrow.
  • Yeah don't go on the East Lancs! There is a decent cycle path along most of it now from Worsley all the way to Knowsley now. Few bad narrow bits of footpath but majority nice cycle path.
