Hi All

Heading over to Mallorca soon; My thirteen year old son who, is just starting out on a road bike, is keen to cycle with me while we are there and I was wondering which area we should base ourselves in so that we can head out together in the mornings for some easy rides which would be suitable for him. In the afternoons, I'd like to head out again on some more challenging routes while he relaxes with the other members of the family. We were thinking of staying in Alcudia unless anyone suggests somewhere more appropriate.

Any help much appreciated.
regards

Alcudia is fine. Also consider Can Picafort or Puerto Pollensa.

I'd say Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia were nicer than Can Picafort. You can pick up decent routes from pretty much anywhere in the north though.

Either Alcudia or Puerto Pollensa would be a good base for both easy and more challenging rides, my preference would be Puerto Pollensa.

You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

    +1 for PP
  • Just to agree with all the about Port de Pollenca is the place to go. For easy rides you can head South along the seafront to Alcudia and continue along the coast. But there's also a maze of little roads between Port de Pollenca and Pollenca town.

For the more difficult there's the ride up to Cap de Formentor, whilst a hilly ride it's something a 13 year old could manage if he has a decent level of fitness as it's not too far.

We have just returned , great cycling and family holiday.
    Stayed here http://www.clubpollentia.com/en/hotel-overview.html.
2 x cycle hire stations on the site both very good.
It was my fist time and I would go back again in a flash.

I'm off to Majorca next week for the nth time. Agree with above anywhere in the North is good. Have stayed in PP but as it's in the far Northern corner I find other places better for access to the centre of the island.

I hit submit before I finished!
Try riding half way along Alcudia bay and the right through the little lanes until you come out on the Pollenca/Port de Pollenca Road. Then cross this road and go down to Cala St Vincenc. This route cuts through rather than over the mountains and should easily be doable for a 13 yo.

Have a coffee overlooking the bay or take your trunks the water is crystal clear.

Take your 13 year old to do Sa Calobra! :D

Strangely my 13yr old wasn't up for doing Mont Ventoux recently so I had to go on my own, I couldnt even tempt him with tandem option - that apparently "would be just as painful as tandems are crap for going up hill, plus I'll have to stare at your back for hours, I'll stay by the pool thanks"

I prefer to stay more in the centre of the island as its much easier to access good rides with plenty of variety.

Just another option but Cala D'Or in the Southeast is nice for the family and is pretty flat with some nice rides up the coast to the north.

But you are also pretty close to San salvador and La Randa Monestries which are nice climbs and views of the whole island from the top for something a bit more challenging.

And you also have the option of hiring a Canyon from Hotel Robinson so if these have ever been on your shopping list its a good way to get a proper test ride in

    Hi Matt
Great place to stay , access to some fantastic routes.
There are two bike hire stations on the site , Max Hauzler and active majorca (Wrong spelling).
I hired a focus from active majorca and could not fault the service, I popped into Max Hs place most days and I can say that thier bike and kit are well looked after , someone is on site morning and evenings and the staff great with advise on routes etc.
Which one have you hired from ?

I stayed there for a week early in the year when it had just reopened after the winter break. Was a really nice place but a bit lacking at the time as it hadn't fully reopened, should be fine at this time of year though!

Only thing I didn't like was the location, although it has pretty much all you need on site, if you do want to go out for dinner or to a bar etc, it's just far enough away from anything else to make it annoying..

    Hi Mat
The" Maris " room we had (Emma,Grace our 10yr old Daughter and me ) was basic . bedroom and bathroom .
But given that we were hardly in it it served our needs very well.
The resort itself is top notch, three swimming pools one indoor two outdoor, we were room and breakfast , food very good , I had a breakfast at 6.30 and then another on after my ride at 10 ish.
Can not comment on the main meals etc , we dinned out every night , very good restaurant about a 15 min walk from the hotel heading to pollenca.
Another one in port pollenca, has Bradly Wiggins TDF bike hung from the ceiling and yellow jerseys etc , plus the food is very good .
Hope you have a great time.
    regards

    PS
Buy the cycling in majorca map , I did and would have been literly lost without it.

    Good point JP
We were talking the other day and recon we spent 60 euros on the bus going to port pollensa , alcudia , and pollenca , mind you the bus drivers are worth paying the money for, we were pipped at shouted at and there was a stand up row between the bus driver and one passenger.
Having said that i would not hesitate to book the same place again.

Just back from Alcudia myself and it was a very popular place for roadies.

Time for me to win the lottery, buy a big yacht and moor up in the port I think

The bire bikes at club pollecia are first rate i know the mechanic there. If you use balear risen also onsire you can buy the canyon once your finished with it i bought the mrs one last year as we only live round the corner and they are amazing. Dont use pro cycle hire in pollenca i used to work there and the stuff that goes on behind the scenes there will just ruin your holiday. Saw so many people deflated with the bike that they never booked and just old poor condition bikes. There is a new max hurzeler dtstion opening in port pollenca next year and thst will be the place to go in future. Best bikes and the shop sales are half the price of everyone else. Pch try selling tyres at 45 earos each they are 25 for gp4000s in there. Worth stocking up while over. Have a great trip,

Is PCH the one that recently relocated opposite Pollenca Park?
