    In Kiswahili there are some wonderful onomatopoeic words like:

    Tinga tinga - generator (from the days of Lister Diesel genny's)
    Piki piki - moped
    seanoconn - gruagach craic!

    Extreme onomatopoeia using letters rather than complete words, Sir Alfred Tennyson's poem uses m and n sounds to produce the idea of murmuring insects:

    ... the moan of doves in immemorial elms,
    And murmuring of innumerable bees.

    And more from the great man, giving a feeling of power by his use of words

    The Eagle

    He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
    Close to the sun in lonely lands,
    Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

    The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
    He watches from his mountain walls,
    And like a thunderbolt he falls.

    A bit highbrow for the usual BB crew innit?

    See your Tennyson and raise you a haiku from the great Basho Matsuo

    An old silent pond...

    A frog jumps into the pond,

    splash! Silence again.

    Why not "tock tick"? Or "flopflip"??

    I think that in all these sorts of couplets the syllable with the "i" sound comes before the one with the "o" sound. Same in phrases such as "wishy-washy" or "tip-top".

    Virtual prize if anyone can come up with a counter example. I might give them a Platonic Kitkat.
