Upping my miles lately not the mtb. Normally have a bowl of porridge before I go out and a banana mid ride. Camelbak with just water in. What do people recommend to take as a snack? And any powders etc I could mix in my water bottle.

Thanks.

Flapjacks, assorted nuts & a couple of high5 tablets in your camelback.

High 5 Source in your Camelbak will actually give you energy, the tablets just replace electrolytes, which isn't really what you're trying to combat.

But will wreck your (Camelbak) bladder,

Banana, flapjack, cereal bars are good. Something with a bit of heft. Sometimes a small bag of jelly babies for the 'get me home' wobbles.

This is easily addressed by pre-ride planning. So for example, ride to cafe for brunch, followed by DH trail to pub for ice-cream and beer. Long XC section via tea-shop for cream tea, then continue on to pub for post-ride analysis. Problem sorted.

Flapjack, fig rolls, jelly babies and Isotonic in my drink. For 50 miles probably won't *need* food unless I'm pushing some hills.

Cheers. Will put it in my bottle and keep camelbak just for water.

I use High5 Isotonic - best of both worlds since you have both electrolytes and carbs in one drink.

Actually, the best xc result I ever had as a teenager was after a banging night out, while unconventional, an all night bender on ale is fantastic carbo-loading.

Also I have a sneaking suspicion i was still pissed so couldn't feel the pain in my legs :D:D:lol::lol:

No it won't, I always used it when I used a CB, never had a problem, and reservoirs are better now too.

All the High 5 stuff has electrolytes, actually High 5 say that it's not hot enough in the UK to justify using the isotonic one, and Source is adequate.

That's the one. I like Summer Fruits flavour, but they're all very palatable.

Mule Bars are pretty good. Less sugar & fat than flapjack, more carbs. The apple one tastes very good too.

Failing that, I take a few museli style bars (the Aldi ones are great).

I tend to carry a few carb gels as well just in case. Electrolyte tabs in my drink.

edit - I do sometimes have a bottle with High Five source in too for really big rides, but my preference tends to be for real food

No - the apple ones are foul - mind you, I dont like cinnamon and there is loads of it in this.

Liquorice Mule Bars however, are about the best you can get - faaantastic!

fighting talk that. Maybe time for a poll?

Can we agree the Mango ones are pretty insipid?

(ps - think the liquorice ones have more fat in but could be wrong?)

    Sacrilege!

I can agree, Mango Tango and PinaColada are bad - but the worst is reserved for Choc Fig fiesta, now they were disgusting...

Summer Fruit and Hunza Nut are bearable in a cardboardy sort of way...

Not seen Choc Orange, but the Zipvit Choc Orange is great. Trouble is that choc does not fare so well in the heat. Clif bars are great - try them if you havent already.

Torq and Clif are definitely the nicest bars, but I find them all a bit rank frankly!

I would load up with the following.

Camelbak with plain water and some electrolytes. Pink salt in water is more than adequate or diluted down coconut water.

Bottle with carb and protein mix. At that sort of distance your muscle tissue will start to breakdown so the protein is a safe guard against being in a prolonged catabolic state. Whey Isolate or Amino Acids are the best sources as they are easier to absorb and digest compared to Whey Concentrate. Plus they tend to come in citrus flavours which will be more palatable on a ride over milkshake type flavours?

Bananas, flapjacks, dried fruit and nut bars for solids.

Key is to keep hydrated for muscles and digestion.

Water, chocolate and a few spliffs usually sorts me out :D

I did buy some Sports Beans recently but I dunno if they made any difference. Taste nice though.

I have a few flavours of Nuun too, but usually use that when I get home.

I really like Nakd bars which are cold-pressed uncooked fruit and nut bars. Cocoa orange is my fave.

I can't now take anything you say seriously. The raspberry ripple and the strawberry yoghurt Torq gels are incredible.

I like the way that their 'naked' rhubard & custard does not contain any rhubarb or custard but does contain 'natural' flavours... In fact they all seem to be made with 55% dates - no sugar or sticky syrup - yeah why would you need any when the main ingredient contains lots of sugar and is sticky and syrupy...

Not that I am dissing them - they do look nice, but their seems to be alot of misdirection to make you think they are like a wonder of nature over science. I am sure there are lots of other bars just as good for you. They do sound tasty though, I must admin - but there is the problem with really tasty snack bars - I know if I bought a box it would be gone in a week and I would eat them when I dont really need to.

Their main point is that they are no "added" sugar. The amount of unnecessary sugar that gets added to stupid things is ridiculous. Sugar in itself isn't bad, but having 12 tons of it in everything you eat is! :P
