Cyclescheme Year3

As I now split my commuting between a motorcycle and bike I decided I could get something that doesn't have all the usual mudguard mounts etc.
In a bid to make this different from all the other Dirty Disco's I asked for this to come without the stickers, I will be applying some but for now I'm enjoying the naked look.

Frame: On One Dirty Disco Carbon Cyclocross Disc Frame
Fork: On One Dirty Disco Carbon Cyclocross Disc Fork
Front Derailleur: SRAM Rival Front Derailleur / Braze On / Double
Rear Derailleur: SRAM Rival Rear Derailleur / Mid Cage
Shifters: SRAM Rival DoubleTap Shifters / Black
Chainset: Shimano CX50 / Black
Crank length: 172.5mm
Chainrings: 46/36T
Bottom Bracket: Shimano
Cassette: SRAM PG 1030 Cassette / 10 Speed / 11-32T
Chain: SRAM PC1031 / 10 Speed / 114 Link Chain
Front Brake: Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake Road - Now 160mm TRP Spyre
Rear Brake: Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake Road - Now 160mm TRP Spyre
Handlebars: Planet X Road Bar Strada Shallow Drop / 40cm / Polished Black
Bar tape: Planet X Cork Handlebar Tape / Black
Stem: Planet X Superlight Team 3D Forged Stem 100mm / Polished Black
Headset: FSA Orbit C-40 No.42 ACB-1 Tapered Headset
Wheels: On-One Reet'ard Trail Wheelset / 29" / 32F 32R
Front Tyre: Continental CycloX-King Wired Tyre / 700c / Black / 35mm
Rear Tyre: Continental CycloX-King Wired Tyre / 700c / Black / 35mm
Inner Tube: Planet X Inner Tubes
Saddle: San Marco Ponza Saddle / Carbon Steel / Black
Seatpost: Planet X Superlight Team 3D Forged Alloy Seatpost / 31.6mm / Polished Black

The only change over the standard spec is an 11-32t cassette, PlanetX also couldn't get the FSA chainset in stock so I ended up with a Shimano CX50 which doesn't bother me.

Currently its un-rideable due to the seatpost being so long, it won't lower enough for me to reach the pedals at the bottom of the pedal stroke so the seat angle will be sorted soon.

I'm a Shimano fan at heart & never used SRAM before, I'm looking forward to seeing how this compares to the 105 on my Merida CX4.

    looks good without the stickers

Just think its ironic its un-rideable because the seatpost is too long and its near a sign that say 'what is growing' :)

I'm looking forward to my replacement brakes arriving as I'm not fond of the BB7's.

All I need now is to get some sleep when I get home from work this morning so I can go out and get it dirty this afternoon :)

They could have levelled it while you were there?

They wouldn't do it unless I paid for a full bike fitting!

As said, 'No' there aren't eyelets for mudguards on this bike, its nice to see smooth lines and not have eyelets popping out.

I can't wait for my stickers to arrive, whilst its nice to see the carbon weave it needs some colour adding to it.

Managed a short ride this afternoon but couldn't get comfortable so changed my saddle for my old Charge Spoon

My saddle will get changed again soon for another Spoon (different colour) but I need to get different coloured bar tape to match 1st.

It seems strange seeing zero miles on one of my bikes

Is this not something you could do yourself..? (the levelling I mean, not the bike fitting)
  • Nice bike

I wonder how these ride with road tyres?

Much better on the road....is the saddle as far forward as you can get it?

I misread the original question, I only took it back to have the seat post cut down, although, this is the 1st time I've ever bought a bike and the shop wouldn't setup the seat height/seat level!

    Nice bike

Its funny you should ask that, I've just put my road tyres on in preperation for tomorrows ride :)

There is still forward movement in the saddle

I went out into the Peak District this morning for a settling in session

    Probably 50% road , 25% hard trail, 25% bridleways

I love this bike, its so light and nimble, great to chuck into the corners, tyres are excelent, off road they grip very well on loose stones/rocks/roots & hard pack earth, on the road they roll quite well even with the humming noise

SRAM is taking a little getting used to, although the gear shifts are quick and precise

The only let down is the brakes, the Avids are appauling compared to my Hayes CX5's. There is a distinct lack of power and the noise (squealing is embarassing).
  • Nice bike

In answer to your question, its fantastic with road tyres, did a quick 20 miles this morning and it feels quite racey (compared to my larger Merida CX4) yet its still very comfortable, even on poorly surfaced roads.

What an excellent bike - looks great and is so versatile.

I don't quite understand the seat post issue: did they simply swop for a shorter one or cut it down? And for them not to level the saddle is surely petty?

I've just come in from a spin on my Dirty Disco which I bought on my C2W scheme last November.

I'm loving the bike and find that I use it more than my pure road bike as I find it more comfortable. I also like the go anywhere feel it has and often mix in a road session with some tracks and a bit of off road.

I don't have any photos handy, but I also left all the stickers off mine as I didn't like the white and bought some black ones from Sticker Bucket. At the moment it just has a single "On-One" sticker on the right hand down tube and I think it looks pretty cool.Very stealth.

I just fitted a carbon bottle cage and will be buying a carbon seat post and stem for it soon. I'm also tempted to get a set of 50mm carbon wheels (probably just cheap Chinese ones off eBay) but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

The cable management system is rivited into the frame and as such the very long seat post didn't slide low enough for me, PlanetX cut the seat post down to size when I took it back into the shop. If I'm honest I didn't expect much of a service from them as I've had problems with them when I ordered my 456 and they kept supplying the wrong parts for the headset.

1st commute into work this morning, what a lovely ride. It feels so racy yet comfortable & forgiving all at the same time, I love it 8) . Looking forward to the ride home and taking the extended 25mile route instead of my straight 17mile route home.

These TRP's are awesome, the squealing that I had with the BB7's has gone :) . The Spyres are nice and powerful, easy to adjust & IMO look much nicer than the BB7's.

The only problem I've noticed with the Spyres is, when the front brake is pulled extremely hard it has on occasion pulled the front wheel out of alignment in the forks, no matter how tight I've done up the quick release, I put this down to the design of the drop out on the fork though

    Try a Shimano QR.
    Nice bike by the way.
  • Nice,Trp Spyres are rather good aren't they.I have the Planet X one and am really enjoying riding it especially on the nice shale/gravel cycle path I use occasionally use.
Just out of interest as I'm after a tail bag what one is it in the pic?

I've got some XT QR Skewers, will give them a try tomorrow when I go out.

The TRP's are awesome, well worth the long wait for them. I've done a few mountain bike trails, Cut Gate/Scaly Gate etc, its tough work but great when you pass the MTB's on the way up.

The bag is a Carradice Super C SaddlePack http://www.carradice.co.uk/index.php?page_id=product&under=range&product_id=34 , I use it for commuting and touring.
  • Cheers;thought it looked familiar as I've been looking at those, think I'm going to have to bite the bullet next month for one as I'm a bit fed up with using a rucksack now.Got to wait though as I have the hand-built wheels to pay for yet  .

  • Update. Re the front wheel moving out of alignment.
I took my bike into PlanetX last week and they have noticed that the drop outs aren't vertical and one side the hub doesn't sit flush & when I braked the wheel moved.
PlanetX are ordering in a replacement fork for me.

I'm recovering from my knee injury (accident on my motorbike) & starting to get strong enough to start cycling again so I've set my bike up into commuting mode, my brother gave me a pair of SKS blades to try, the rear fitted 1st time, although I've had to fit an outer gear cable to stop the cable rubbing on the mudguard rubbers (slowing shifting & wearing through the mudguard fitting bands), the front took quite a bit of tweaking to get fitted but for the long wet commutes they are better than having nothing.

I've also fitted my Marathon Plus tyres, I hope I never get a puncture as these were awful to fit on these wheels (unlike my old wheels on my Merida)
