Breathing problems under loading

I am fine until my heart rate gets to about 160 - then I have trouble getting enough breath. I have had this for about 2 weeks - following a 20 mile obstacle course (rat race dirty weekend). I got quite battered, cold and may have picked something up in the open water swimming. There is no pain, but my chest feels constrained when trying hard. No wheezing or coughing. Any ideas?

Are your symptoms new - and didn't happen prior to the obstacle course?

What is your previous maximum heart rate that didn't include breathing trouble?

There have been medical reports of various illnesses acquired during 'mud races', etc.

Jaycosta - I am 52 - do about 8-11hrs of cycling/running per week. Yes this is new. Max heart rate about 180 - like everybody else I max out and breathe hard - but not when the heart rate is so low. I have had the feeling before - after sprinting at the end of a 5 or 10k running race - but never on a bike

Sloppy - I am happy to give details of my movements if you wish.

Imposter - looks like I will - but scared of being told "well, just don't do it" - I was hoping someone would say - yes this happened to me - it was....

No medical practitioner would advise you not to do beneficial exercise. Just best to get yourself checked out by an expert rather than a bunch of random strangers on an internet website! I'm sure it's nowt to be worried about

Do you have any new or excessive lung or throat mucus? Anything 'colorful'? Any new or odd tastes in your mouth?

There might have been a lot of dust (and who knows what else) in the air during the obstacle race.

I experienced similar breathing problems several years ago after riding through an area that had been badly flooded.
Lots of dust and mildew in the air. It took about a full year before I felt that my lungs had fully recovered.
Something that helped me was doing torso bends and stretches to compress and relax my lungs - particularly side-to-side bends. Was then able to cough and expel more mucus.

Hi guys - thanks for the posts. There wasn't anything in the lungs - or tastes in the back of the throat etc. It could have been pollen I guess. I say it could have been - as it felt better on Saturday when I did a 130km ride (Strava!). Then yesterday I did some running sprint intervals as a test - without any shortness of breath. Tonight I have been out doing some work at the front, and attacking the hills - all good. So as quick as it came on - it appears to have gone away
