Mid-Upper Thigh Pain

Hi,

I've been getting an achy pain in my right thigh for the past few months, which is holding me back from riding as often and as hard as I'd like. It seems to come on when road biking, I mountain bike as well, but that doesn't seem to aggravate it, and I notice it particularly when standing up pedalling uphill.

It comes on as a dull ache in the middle to three-quarters of the way up my right thigh. It feels in the centre-front of the thigh, not the inside, outside, or back. I starts as a dull ache and the area feels tight. If I carry on cycling a lot and particularly pedalling while standing, then it feels more painful. If I rub my thigh with the heel of my hand after the ride it seems to help relieve the pain.

I was hoping someone might have some ideas what could be causing this and what I could try to help stop it happening. I stretch my quads after my rides and the right one is a little tighter than the left, but I'm not sure if the problem is with the quad or perhaps with something else - hip flexors perhaps?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

I'm by no means a specialist in this field but I found using a foam roller on my legs really helps loosen up tight legs and in particular tight thighs.

It sounds similar to something I get towards the end of long hilly rides, and it does sound like it's in the region of the hip flexors. It just might be that you're using them more than previously, or that they aren't as well developed as other muscle groups so are fatiguing first.

You can do specific hip flexor stretches that might help, also riding an easier gear, if you have one available, can take some of the load off them. The road riding position does tend to tighten and shorten the hip flexor muscles.

Thanks for your replies. I've used a foam roller on the front of my thighs and it does help relieve the symptoms. It doesn't seem to stop the pain coming on though.
The hip flexors do seem a likely source of the problem from what I've read online. I'll try doing some specific stretches and see if that has any benefit.
I'm not really sure what else might be causing the problem...
