Anyone got any tips on a decent set of deep section wheels.Either full carbon or alloy rimmed with carbon fairing.
Im looking for a stealth black pair but it seems that they are all so bloody expensive.
I like the look of the Mavic Cosmic Carbones etc but they are a bit to blingy for me.
Ive thought of Planet x but have heard some dodgy stories of carbon rim failure?

Use a black permanent marker pen on the rim
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

I haven't, where did you hear these stories?

  • Planet X gets raving reviews all the time, can't imagine there is much truth to these stories unless it is one person slating them simply because of a one off occasions.

I would recommend Planet X wheels.

Go to the classifieds. You're just throwing away money if you buy PX wheels at their RRP.

    Could be Planet X then!
Will have to give it some thought.

Are there any 'cheap' ones yet that go wub-wub-wub when its hammer time?

You need deep ones with big volume of air inside, don't think any 50-60 do that... 90 is the way to go to be loud

Sounds like £££, any 90mm rims spring to mind that you'd consider building on? I only know of the BLB ones.

My 50s make a decent noise when pressing on, I'd say.

    Whulp, whulp, whulp,

    Saigon?

It really is only a short matter of time till Sunday morning club runs are accompanied by strap on speakers belting out "Ride of the Valkryies". Get down Richer Sounds, it'll be cheaper than a set of ENVE's.
    Dry - 2015 Parlee ESX
    Wet - 2013 Madone 7 Series
    Commuting & general abuse - Boardman AIR9.2s
Carbon and electric everything. I've yet to get zapped and nothings melted (yet anyway)

Bad news... quote from a guy I fitted with an 80 mm tubular carbon rim

"if it’s to intimidate/impress/cower anyone he’s approaching to overtake, then perfect

if it’s for his own pleasure then he’ll need to fit a microphone to the seat stays and feed the sound into an earpiece (in which case he may as well pre-record the sound and play it back), as he’ll always be ahead of most of the acoustic (unless he rides a TTT and is rarely on the front)"

Ive just taken delivery of a set of these
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151256899509? ... 1423.l2649
VERY impressed so far - 200 miles and they havent exploded / melted or dissolved yet :D
Braking with the supplied pads well modulated and strong, and they make a satisfying, QUIET wizz noize on braking rather than the horse scaring screech from my friends Exalith Mavics
I know everyone will be along soon to tell me why they are rubbish, but at £300 landed and in my hand, I am prepared to learn.
They also look VERY stealth on my Btwin Facet 7 frame - will put some pics up soon

Great news for my wallet, although the first point still stands as a valid reason..

From the photos the real wheel is dished incorrectly, is yours dished correctly, or in other words does it sit in the middle of the chain stays?
I have used those hubs once, Novatec 271/272, they are pretty robust no nonsense hubs that should not give you problems.

  • I've got a pair of Campag Bora 35's on my Specialized that replaced a pair of Mavic RSYS-SLR's. Are they better? I don't think so. If anything, I do find them a little slower. Might sell them to be fair and just buy the Mavics again!

They look ace though and isn't that half the battle?

Ugo - thanks for the observation - I value your expert knowlege.
Pretty sure the dishing is correct

Certainly didnt have to reindex or change the RD when I swapped from the old Aksiums
For those interested in the "stealth" look

I really dislike valve extenders. I don't see how you can bother to faff with them and not just buy 60mm or 80mm tubes. Would also look more sensible. Otherwise, interesting looking bike.

Yes - theyre coming off this evening - new tubes just arrived - they leak like buggers and look much too vunerable for comfort!

Indexing has nothing to do with the wheel dish... from here it looks like it's not dished properly, but it could just be the photo. Basically the tyre has to be perfectly in line with the seat tube, within 1 mm

Ugo. Thanks - Makes sense re the indexing - thats the hub isnt it!!
Checked - it is dead central - the seat tube is Aero at the back, so the midline is easy to check
Irritatingly just spotted a big cut in the sidewall though!!

That reminds me I need some lighter boots. I bought mine 20 years ago when I lived in Italy and used to hike above 2000 mt... I need something more suited to country walking, no chance I will need crampons round here...

    Op - bike looks nice

For those who've ridden PX wheels, how do they ride? Stiff? Bone shaking?
