OK enough of the devils advocate stuff and the name calling
The reason this is so hugely emotive (for me anyway) is that this accident plays to my worst fears - I'm pretty sure like most of you that basic roadcraft means I'm not going to become a statistic filtering up the left of a tipper lorry but when I kiss my kids cheerio and head off into the Scottish countryside making jokes about not wanting to end my days in a rest home (they read the news too) - being cleaned out from behind whilst spinning happily along a straight road is the one nightmares are made of. RIP.
  • Sad news and frightening to a new road rider.

How many people ride with lights on in daylight?

An idiot in a car is going to hit you with or without cycle lights on. The reason...they are not paying attention and their mind is focused elsewhere!!

and it's hard to see how it's anything other than bad/dangerous driving.

Or bad / dangerous cycling - we simply dont know. There's 1001 reasons why this may have happened from the van driver deliberately mowing him down to the cyclist wearing headphones and having swerved into the middle of the lane right into the path of the van giving him loads of space. Even a court may not get to the truth unfortunately
Of course we don't know for sure... I said that quite clearly. However as I also already said, it appears the impact was a) on the rear of the bike, b) hard enough to kill the cyclist (I hope) instantly and c) on a wide straight open road at a time of day when there'd be good visibility. Given all that, my bet is that this was an overtaking attempt that went badly wrong. A cyclist swerving into the middle of the lane should never be cause for an incident like this! A driver shouldn't be overtaking a cyclist that close precisely because they may have to swerve at short notice to avoid one of the many massive craters decorating the roads or to avoid some other sort of road debris or simply because of an unexpected gust of wind. You're supposed to leave as much room as you would for any other vehicle, ie you should be right over in the other lane. Read the last two rules here, it's not exactly ambiguous. Many drivers simply refuse to slow down when they come up behind a cyclist and would rather keep their foot down and try to squeeze past than decelerate and wait a few seconds. I really don't think there will be much trouble figuring this one out.

We are having heaps of issues with motorists and cyclists colliding in Australia. Police believe a lot can be attributed to drivers distracted with their phones texting, talking etc.
two major incidents in the Sydney area in the last month with bunch riders being hit. How can a driver not see six cyclist riding together??

A cyclist has been killed in Euxton near Chorley, Lancashire
The driver taking a left hand bend over the M6 went across the road and hit and killed the rider
I use this road quite often and its got me thinking
My thoughts go out to his family and friends

  • Very sorry to hear about this. So many cyclists out on the roads in Scotland yesterday and its shocking how at risk we still seem to be.
