Post Ride Cough?

i suffer fairly frequent bouts of coughing after rides. it can be anything from a 12-15 mile commute to a 60 mile slog.
i'll cough for a few hours after the ride. i'm wondering what it may be? pollen (it happens year round), pollution, hidden respiritory illness, other or is it just one of those things.
does anyone else get this? its chuffing annoying

Yup, I get this as soon as I come in from the outside but it only lasts about 10 minutes.Advocate of disc brakes.0

stop smoking?
maybe its just your fitness levels...
I usually find it hurts a little if I breathe really deep after a long ride for a few hours but its usually better after a few hours.Scott Speedster S20 Roadie for Speed

i dont smoke but do love a pie/cake. i may need to track it as it may be related to my long relationship with Mr Kipling.
however i have been commuting for 10+ years now and id say i wasnt to bad for a big lad or as one lovely chap said to me at a cycle day at donnington park once 'you aren't too slow for a fat lad'. cheers GrandadCube Cross 2016

I get this as well and assumed it was something to do with a dry throat after lots of heavy breathing in the wind. Might have to get it checked out now if its not a common thing!0

I know someone with similar symptoms especially after a hard time trial, they where subsequently diagnosed with Cough-variant asthma. May be worth a chat with your doctor.0
-
I would get things checked out. At the start of a ride it is not unusual as your lungs get going.0

Clucking Bell, maybe i do need a check up. cheers all.Cube Cross 2016

I cough sometimes and they're is nothing wrong with me?
Especially if its cold and I'm riding hard (and therefore sucking loads of cold air in.).0 -
I recall I used to get this after I'd worked my arse off - not for very long though and not related to going indoors - it was just after a very hard effort - could taste it too.
It's not so bad now, so I'm happy that mine was just fitness (or lack thereof!) whilst pushing hard.
If you're getting it everytime and it's lasting hours then I would think medical attention is recommended.0 -

But that's to be expected, as given your avatar, you seem to be a little horse.0 -
yep i get it too, I had mild athsma as nipper which might not help but I notice that it's definitely worse in dry conditions, particularly when MTBing - I usually associated it with the dust. With all the Saharan sand about it could be that? We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

I was going to suggest exercise induced asthma... You really neeed to get to a gp for a proper diagnosis...0

Well to swim against the tide of doom and gloom I have had it sometimes after hard exercise over a 20yr period now, sometimes football, cross country running or out the bike. I just assume it's a consequence of intense effort and have never bothered to get it checked out, it's always cleared up after a while and there are no other symptoms with it.0
-
Not doom and gloom, I've had asthma for over 50 years and proper diagnosis and appropriate medication has enabled me to lead an active and productive lifestyle including 30 years of running and 5 years of cycling0

I get this too, not a coughing fit or anything, but a fair amount of coughing for an hour or so after. Again, I also had asthma as a kid.If the bar ain't bending, you're just pretending0

I also have this I got told its due to your lungs being exercised during the ride,
Guess they get a workout of their own or something,, maybe they get stretched and expand their capacity.Specialized S Works SL2 . Campagnolo Record 11spd. rolling on Campag Zonda wheels

It may be exercise induced asthma, I suffer from it after a hard ride.
I don't have full blown asthma but my brother does, so I guess I inherited part of the gene.
If you google it you will find it's very common.
I have had lung function tests throughout my working life so I know I'm ok, however I would get it checked out if I were you.0 -
I get this a little on occasion. I've always put it down to hard breathing loosening up a touch of phlegm. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.0

It's most likely that you are just getting some irritation in your airways from breathing harder. Normally you breathe through your nose and the air you breathe in gets warmed and humidified, but this is happens less when you are breathing faster and through your mouth. I'm a doctor and work in respiratory medicine. Cough variant asthma does exist but if you never wheeze it's probably just a cough. It would be worth seeing your GP and perhaps keeping a record of your peak flow before and after exercise. This is a simple lung function test that can be done at home. You could get referred for full lung function tests but your GP probably won't do this for mild symptoms.0

I have this cough as well. Excercise induced Asthma is my diagnosis also.0
