    Thanks for all of the replies. Some interesting things raised and discussed.

    I have concluded to sell my bike, given I have not been out on it since I posted the opening gambit (though had a major tooth extraction last week).

    Time for change in a positive way. I will anoint every cliche to it and see what happens, but as others have said the beauty of a sport such as this is we can come back to it. Out of condition yes, but that can be sorted.

    Have found a couple of lovely bike shops down here too if I ever get the urge back anytime soon.
