As a material, carbon is a little stiffer than steel, which in turn is 3 times as stiff as aluminium (comparing Young's modulus). However, this doesn't take the material density into account. Factor that in (specific modulus) and carbon still wins, followed by aluminium, with steel trailing behind (which is why you don't get many steel aircraft). Now factor in things like minimum wall thickness (to make the frame robust) and steel becomes a realistic option again. It's horses for courses; carbon gives you a few more options when you're playing the stiffness/weight/cost tradeoff, but you could make a pretty good bike frame (or a very poor one) out of any of the three. Things like tube diameter are a much bigger factor, which is why fat tubes and chunky bottom brackets are all the rage. Some of these things are a bit easier to do with carbon than they are with other materials, because it's easier to build tapered tubes, and add in extra material where it makes most difference.
FWIW, out of the 20+ bike frames I've owned at various times, both the stiffest and bendiest were made from aluminium.
Throwaway comment. It's very stiff. The XLS seems as stiff. The Ritchey as stiff. I have no idea which of them is more or less stiff. They're quite stiff. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

So I finally got my SLX two weeks ago. And I had a quick ride yesterday to test. It seems to be fast bike (terrain was dry; I had continental cx tyre 35mm). The shape is quite compact, which I like ( I have a small frame). the Rival hydraulic disc are great. My only complain is about the wheel. I have the planet-x disc wheel (alloy): there are quite heavy and look a bit fragile. Is there anyone who has upgraded the wheel on the SLX? if so what is the best choice? And any advice on how to put tubeless tyre?
cheers,

Yes. I have Pacenti SL25's with Vittoria XG Pro TNT tubeless. Much nicer ride overall.
I can't claim credit for having put those tyres on those rims. But, on my other bike, I have Schwalbe One 28C tubeless on the same rims. Piece of cake. Stick some tubeless valves on. Whack the tyres on. Get them seated. Stick some air in. Let them go up for a bit to get some shape. Let them down. Take the valve core out. Inject about 50ml sealant. Pump them up again. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Some CX tyres are definitely easier to set up tubeless than others, and I've always found the Vittorias very good in that respect.Pannier, 120rpm.0 -

I will be doing. Indeed I did for Battle on the Beach. They worked very very well for multi terrain. No mud though. Though there was occasional deep sand. To be honest, I found last year, if it's truly truly deep mud, even my Clement PDX failed......My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

That's a shame. Can you bodge 'em?
In other news I put rim tape back successfully on mine. And new tyres. Or, rather, clean different tyres. Then I rode the bike from the patio, through the kitchen, down the hall, one lap of the living room and back out to practice my skilz. Kids were amazed. Mrs was out. I know. With tubes as well. I wanted to try perhaps something like a Challenge Chicane.

Yeah, that's all very well for the hall section, but too compromised on the kitchen section. Might just stick to XN Pro TNT......My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)
