Been to local Trek shop today, demo bikes are to small to use, I'm 6'3" 95kg aiming for sub 90kg

The 29er Remedy 8 seems great, Slash also is well equipped. But buying a bike just on looks & spec is mad when the bike is such an investment. if I brought the wrong size or model I'd just have to love it & live with it.

Do you have any ideas? Demo days sound great but I also hear about them after they have happened.
I'm not a racer, but I like to churn out 2-3hr rides,
I love Cannock and Llandegla cycle parks.

Updrade RockShox dropper seat post.
Went tubeless DIY style using a 20" BMX tube. Lasting well.

    £100/month is somewhat vague.

What sort of riding do you want to do?
The Slash is a bit of a tank and no use unless you're going to really ride it hard.

RMonkey, yeah it did look a bit robust, I surpose I ride XC with trail parks such as Llandegla, Coed y Brenin & Cannock. I'm not big into jumping but will get air on some table tops & pure down hill doesn't interest me.

£100 a month being vague :S the bike will be on loan or 0% so £100 a month ranges bikes from £500-£3000. I'm more about choosing the right bike not the right price bracket. But high £2800 is where I want to stop.

Forget the Slash and Remedy. Both are good bikes but a bit ott for what you want.
Have a look at the Fuel EX and Giant Anthem

I've hired an Anthem & Top Fuel in the passed. What's the difference between an Anthem & Trance.

I quite like the sound of a 650b.

Anthem is lighter and shorter travel. Trance is better suited to slightly harder riding.
I have had both and preferred the Anthem. I did everything from 100km xc rides to gravity enduro races on mine. It's a surprisingly capable bike.
The 2014 Trance comes with very poor forks and due to the weird head tube size you are stuck with them. Giant have decided UK riders don't deserve the good versions of the Trance which they sell in America. I was all set to buy a 2014 Trance until I saw the specs of the uk models.

Thanks for the advice & chat, to much choice is great and bad at the same time. I knew when I was being shown the Remedy that it was a bit ott-pricey in the back of me mind.

Yes £100 a month is being bloody vague.

£100 for 1 year or £100 a month for 20,000 years, plus you also need to take into account interest etc.

You say you're not bothered about price bracket and its about getting the right bike, but then say you have a maximum, which is it.

Price is a massive way of filtering out bikes.

Why do you know that? What do you actually want to do? Limiting you order budget to something realistic will help. Are you actually looking at £2500 bikes, or not?
  • D4V1D
    D4V1D Posts: 233
I know that I'm hammering my HT because the rear hub is needing more frequent servicing & I don't mind doing 2' drop off jumps. But I'm working harder to control & land properly. On some steep decents i have to slow down off the pace. I'll be keeping my HT for XC (fun/easy) training.

My actual budget would be capable to stretching to £3400. But I don't want to spend that much. But on the other hand I don't want to buy a bike that I want to change after 6 months.

My realistic budget for bike spec would be between £2000 - £3400. Which would be between £50 - £100 a month.

The monthly cost is irrelevant, if you want recommendations you need to give a narrower budget, which you're getting to.

Any decent bike will handle 2 foot drops fine, don't go buying a big trail bike just because of that. If you're stuck on what to get I'd try and get to a 'demo day' locally a try a few things, that'll at least help you narrow down. As Cooldad said you're basically looking at the vast majority of bikes on sale, you need something to differentiate between them.

That's somewhere between 3 and 4 years paying a bike off. Seriously - too long. 12 months cycle to work type scheme makes sense, years doesn't.

You've received tonnes of advice, but the point is that you're not helping yourself by not having a clue what to buy.

If you go onto a car forum and say "I want a car, it must have 4 wheels and cost between £8000 and £95000, what should I buy?" would you expect a lot of agreement!?

David, do you know what type of bike you want? And what type of riding? Could you answer these next questions so that we can focus some efforts?

    1) do you mind whether it is full sus or hardtail, or not sure or not fussed?
    2) do you want to ride a range of terrains or mostly one sort? If only one, is it downhill, or jumps/bmx tracks, or freeride, or always flat stuff etc.
    3) is brand identity/keeping up with the Jones important (I.e xtr gear is light but expensive and you might find that actually top spec gear isn't necessarily the best for your requirements).
    4) What sort of trails are there around you, or where you intend to ride?

Based on those answers, and for approx 2k budget, we might be able to offer a little more insight.

    2) do you want to ride a range of terrains or mostly one sort? If only one, is it downhill, or jumps/bmx tracks, or freeride, or always flat stuff etc. THIS BIKE WILL BE FOR THE WEEKEND TRAIL PARKS SUCH AS LLANDGELA, CANNOCK, COED Y BRENNIN. BLUE, RED AND BLACK RUNS. NEXT YEAR I AIM TO USE THIS BIKE FOR THE RAT RACE COAST TO COAST, SLEEPLESS IN THE SADDLE AND SUCH LIKE THAT. (SPELLING AND EVENT NAMES MAYBE WRONG)
    3) is brand identity/keeping up with the Jones important (I.e xtr gear is light but expensive and you might find that actually top spec gear isn't necessarily the best for your requirements). DON'T CARE ABOUT BRANDING, AS LONG AS THE OVERALL PRODUCT WORKS AS A COMPLETE PACKAGE. I DON'T WANT A HEAVY BIKE THOUGH, AIMING FOR 12.5Kg OR LESS.
    4) What sort of trails are there around you, or where you intend to ride?
1)Loacl area is great for a mixture of forests joined together by greenlanes(muddy when wet) and unclassified roads (rough surface), with a mixture of climbs so are 1in10, so low gearing (2x10) would be needed.
    2) Llandgela
    3) Cannock Chase
    4) Coed Y Brennin
    5) Church Stretton, Shropshire
    6) Eastridge, Shropshire
    7) Hopton Woods, Shropshire

I dislike plain black bikes, I like a bit of colour, namely Red, White, bright cheerful.
I'm use to having a dropper seat.
Not bothered to much about wheel size but leaning towards 27.5 as I like fast steering wheels.
Not bothered about Carbon, seen friends bikes with carbon rips/cracks, I like Aluminum truth be told.

This will be a bike I'm aiming to keep for 5 years at least.
My HT will be used midweek to still commute back and forth via the green lane and local woods.

Hope this is a wider picture, but most of it is already in my signature.

    Thanks.

PS. Been looking at this https://www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbike ... ab-reiter2 it's weight is a bit high, but not by much as it has a dropper seat included.
