Riding with KK wheel spindle

This might be a stupid question - hope not.
My KK Road Machine came with a special rear wheel spindle so you can mount it in the clamp. Is it OK to ride on the road with it? I just did 40 miles and nothing went wrong - any problem leaving it this way?
Also - what are the springs in the spindle for? The KK instructions says to remove them - again doesn't seem to have made any difference.
