Speaking as someone with no medical qualifications whatsoever, I think it means your knee is farked.

More precisely, your anterior cruciate ligament is farked.

    You scheduled for surgery?

I think Ugo made the point earlier that answers like that are probably beyond the scope of the forum, unfortunately. Every op is different, so even someone else's experience of having the same procedure might not be much use to you. Best ask your surgeon or your physio.

Wait for the advice from your Orthopaedic surgeon.

You'd be an idiot to base any decisions or expectations on what any of us can tell you.
Wait to see the appropriate specialist.
Presumably the reason you didn't get an explanation or guidance from the doctor along with the preliminary report is because he knew better than to pre-empt the specialist. Don't you think it would be wise for you to wait too?

As Ai_1 says, please don't base decisions on the following but hopefully it is useful as a comparison.

Via two different injures, I have managed to tear my ACL and meniscus in both knees. Had to have two ops on each knee - one to reconstruct the knee and one to trim the meniscus.

In terms of time pressure, the first knee was operated on about 3 to 4 months before a London to Paris ride. I followed my surgeon's advice - the more you take it easy at first, the more you can ramp up training later. Week one meant loads of ice packs and anti inflammatories, then 3 weeks of prescribed exercises, physio and crutches. Following 3 weeks was the same with the inclusion of 20 minutes static cycling on a gym recumbent and some strengthening via gym machines. After that built up the miles steadily and used constrictive bandaging after every ride to minimie swelling.

Rode to Paris with no problems.
  • You've torn one of the two major ligaments that give your knee stability, half of the cartilage (the shock absorbing part) and in the process have bruised the bone below the knee. Everything else major seems to have survived, there is a bit of swelling in the joint (expected) and one of the other major ligaments is sprained but not torn .
Bad but not the worst injury in the world.
What to do? Rest up until you have a definitive management plan
