Help Lowering Heartrate

Hi,
Me and a friend went for an 8hr xc ride this weekend. Over the course of the 77k and 2500m his heart rate was on average 20bpm lesser than mine even though we both have similar highs and lows (me 193&50 - him 192 &45).
My training (I am a mtber but the mtb forum is terrible for fitness advice) consists of a spin class mid-week (run by a cyclist), 2hr Friday night ride and a 3-4hr ride on a Sunday.
I know I will need to train more, but is there any specific type of training I can do to reduce my average heartrate? I have read that long, steady state rides are good for endurance, and also read the contray so I am in a pickle.

More training I think is the answer.
I run which helps build a better cardio system.
Also, try concentrating on your breathing technique.
Plus, we are all different.0 -
How have you established that 192/193 are your max HRs? The other thing to say is that two individuals' HRs are simply not comparable, and you should read nothing into the fact that one is apparently higher or lower than the other.0

Two peoples heart rates aren't really comparable. Even the same person on two different days could record a different hr at a given power output if the are ill, fatigued, recently eaten, dehydrated, and so on.0 -

I am an identical twin and my brother and I have similar physiques (both height and weight) and our indoor FTPs (on Kickrs) are identical, yet his heart is able to beat faster than mine and will average higher than mine - we're talking about 10bpm different in averages and peaks.
If two people have different FTP/ability but they ride together then each rider will be putting in a different amount of effort compared to their max. This will affect heart rate as the heart rate reacts to the stress you put on your body.
I like to concentrate on my efforts and let others do the same with theirs.0 -
It doesn't matter what his heart rate was. What matters is how much power he was putting out
Heart rate is a personal thing but Watts are Watts 8)0 -

There is no way of denying I was crackered at the end of it - it did take 2 hours to cover 10k at one point, on the flat (over marshes etc).
Well in that case I will keep on keeping on and keep going forward with my training. A road bike will be on the agenda at somepoint this year but until then I am going to have to do more on the mtb when I can.
