No they are not, I have converted a 3 ring deore crank to 1x10 using a race face narrow wide and shorter bolts
There's a close up of it fitted in my trance thread.0 -
So you just used single ring bolts on the middle position of the crank ?
Single are deffo to short for mine0 -

Fitted just like this0 -
Same way I fitted mine, I used Blackspire chainring bolts and it fitted no problems, you must be doing something wrong.

For reference normal single ring bolts don't fit .. We tried two sets things like the e thirteen / blackspire are slightly longer so work fine0 -
Been using 1x9 for a few years now on a XC/ST bike. My advice would be to put on Excel what you current gearing is to map it against different size rings/cassettes. I don't ride on the road so I didn't need a big ring and only very rarely used my granny ring so the choice was down to whether I would compromise the bottom end or the top end. Went for a 30t ring in the end as I didn't want to compromise climbing even if I run out of gears on the fast bits. I just free wheel, no big deal. I always planned to move to a 10 speed cassette but don't feel the need now.
Life with one shifter and no front mech is fantastic.
I have a conventional ring made by Homebrewed but with no ramps, a short cage mech and good chain tension I never drop the chain even without a device.0
