I'd have thought that the sensible thing is to buy spares when you see them cheap

So, just to be clear - I should buy things I don't yet need that won't fall in price and I shouldn't buy things I do need that will fall in price.
    Brilliant,thanks for that.

I was going to ask how is there not a campag cassette available for less than 100 quid, but I see it's 11 speed and that's actually the cheapest standard price there is. Wow. I don't think I'll be going 11 speed anytime soon.

And over £300 quid rrp for an SR11 cassette?

Campagnolo spares tend to be more expensive than Shimano equivalents
    I paid £104 for a 12-29 cassette for my Athena replacement,Ultegra 11 speed costs about £45.Campag chain £29,Shimano £20.(Ribble Cycles)

Isn't the spacing for 11 speed identical for Campag and Shimano? So using an ultegra cassette for £45 is totally possible.

Who pays rrp? And you can easily buy a Chorus cassette for less than 100 quid!

If you can't read you aren't in a position to judge what is or isn't brilliant!

Seriously - consumables are consumables. You will need them at some point so unless you live in the tiniest of flats and are really skint, if youdo your own maintenance there's no benefit in not keeping a stock of parts.

Of course, you can carry this to extremes and I now have virtually an entire bike in spare parts........

I realise this. I was looking at why the other guy had spent £100 rrp on a cassette.
  • However I think my Athena groupset looks and works well and I am now a committed Campag user. (Some people like Fords and some like Mercedes)

Surely that should be Toyota v Ferrari?

    Corrected.

Miche do a very good campag 11 speed cassette for sensible money. I would use that.

  • I've taken all your advice on board and next time I buy a cassette I'll buy one of these-
    http://www.merlincycles.com/campagnolo-super-record-11-speed-cassette-48489.html
It's reduced by over £100, a much bigger saving than is available with the Athena/Chorus. Result :D
Or should I buy it now and keep it in a cupboard?

If I was spending that much on a cassette I'd put it in a glass box and place it on the mantelpiece.

Despite being meant ironically, this post should be preserved for eternity for being the first time that these words have been used on an internet forum.
